The terrible warlord Hun from “Mulan” nearly got even scarier. Return to a scene cut from the film, in which we can see him exterminating an entire village.
With the cavernous voice of Richard Darbois in the French version of Mulan, a monolithic build to make you cold in the back and an unlimited cruelty, the leader of the Huns Shan-Yu is undoubtedly one of the Disney villains. scariest of the 90s.
However, as can be seen in one of the cut scenes from the film (available on Disney +), his savagery and inhumanity were almost even more demonstrative. Indeed, while the definitive version of Mulan revealed to us the rubble of a village trampled by the horde of Shan-Yu (just after the song “A beautiful girl to love”), the bonus sequence allows us to find out what happened before the arrival of the Chinese army.
There is a Shan-Yu more threatening than ever, able to see through the eyes of his hawk, and to control it from a distance. As his soldiers finish ransacking the village mercilessly, the leader of the Huns seeks to make sure they haven’t left any survivors.
One of his men, in a flash of compassion, took in a small canary locked in a cage. Unfortunately, this act of charity did not escape the wards of the falcon, which therefore undertakes to complete the little bird while its master settles his account with the Good Samaritan.
“When making the film, we wanted to find out who Shan-Yu was”, explains director Tony Bancroft in the introduction to the scene. “It took us down an interesting path. We started to develop a scene where we wanted him to be a spiritual character, or else related to the falcon, that he could see through his eyes. to a fun, mystical and magical thing, but it took longer to get there. “
In order to favor the character of Mulan, this aspect of Shan-Yu had to be left out by the film crew. But this chilling additional sequence allows us to see how far the cruelty of the leader of the Huns almost went.
