Microsoft open-source PowerToys collection complements Windows 10
Microsoft has software that will allow you to customize parts of Windows 10. It’s not included in the box, but it’s still worth checking out – despite the large “Preview” label on the app.
PowerToys is an open source program available on GitHub, the code storage service Microsoft bought for $ 7.5 billion in 2018. You can download the latest version of PowerToys by going to his exit page.
Windows remains the most popular PC operating system in the world and remains the source of around 15% of the company’s total revenue. The PowerToys add-on is the basis for testing functionality that could ultimately be added to the main operating system, depending on how well it is received.
The idea has been around for decades. Original Microsoft PowerToys debuted with Windows 95, and users could download them from the Microsoft website. These were essentially prototype programs that company employees developed to test functionality during the build of Windows 95, said Raymond Chen, a longtime employee of Microsoft, in a 2005. blog post.
The idea then fell out of fashion until last year, when Microsoft ad that PowerToys was coming back.
This time, users have a channel to report problems and suggest ideas, as the PowerToys project lives on GitHub. In addition, Microsoft is now taking a community approach: the PowerToys repository on GitHub shows that Microsoft employees have took into consideration strangers proposals use third-party tools to expand the official collection.
There are now seven Windows 10 PowerToys, up from two last summer. Here is what you will get in the Download.
FancyZones allows you to create a custom layout for open programs on your desktop – useful for staying organized if you often work on many different programs at once.
For example, you can divide your office into six regions. Once you’ve created this layout, you can hold down the Shift key and drag an open program into one of the regions, which appear as gray rectangles, and it will simply simply snap into place.
If you want to change the size of the image files, you will not have to open an image editing program like Paint to do this.
Instead, you can select them in File Explorer or on your desktop, right-click and use the “Resize Images” option that PowerToys adds. You have the choice between a few dimensions and you can customize these dimensions. You can also change the file name format of the new image that Windows will create for you.
Change the keyboard shortcut to open a new File Explorer window with the PowerToy Keyboard Manager.
You can now operate one key on your keyboard like any other – so, for example, if your “A” key is broken, you can program the “F10” key to take its place. You can also change Windows keyboard shortcuts. The developers of PowerToys plan to allow customization of shortcuts for individual programs.
The PowerRename tool.
Sometimes you have to change the names of a bunch of different files – for example, if you’ve downloaded a bunch of image files from a smartphone and they all have generic names with numbers that you want to make more readable so you can find what you’re looking for. Normally, you should rename the theme one by one. With PowerRename, you can change them all at once.
PowerToys Run gives quick access to your programs.
PowerToys Run gives you quick access to files and applications. When you press Alt-Space on your keyboard, a large rectangular text box appears in the middle of your screen, and you can start the search – or execute a shell command, or perform a mathematical calculation. If you’re tired of locating files or applications from the Start menu or the command prompt, this utility may be a new alternative sufficient for most searches.
This feature allows you to hold down the Start key for a while (you can set the length of time you need to press) to display a quick guide to the other keys you can press to trigger keyboard shortcuts for features such as settings , file explorer and dictation.
