Who is it with?

In the only episode we were able to see, several MCU actors resume their respective roles: Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter), Dominic Cooper (Howard Stark), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) or Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye)… This On the other hand, it is not Chris Evans who lends his voice to the young Steve Rogers but a certain Josh Keaton. Jeffrey Wright is the latest addition to the Marvel stable where he will play the character of the Watcher, a cosmic entity who observes what happens in the universe and alternate realities.

Well worth a look ?

In the first episode uploaded to Disney +, Marvel’s What If …? takes on one of the most beloved Avengers in comics: Captain America. Exit Steve Rogers, this time it is Peggy Carter who enters Stark’s machine and becomes a super-soldier.

Once this assumption is acquired, the series only sweeps in 30 minutes the 2 hours of First Avenger. Interesting to see for die-hard fans of the film, who will find winks and easter eggs there. But this first episode is far from the expected revolution.

The screenplay sweeps away notions of empowerment and feminism far too quickly even if Captain Carter does not lack style and she has nothing to envy to Captain America. Despite this, she gets the limelight stolen by a Steve who plays an unexpected sidekick role.

On the animation side, What If navigates between 2D and 3D. If Marvel could do better on that side, this artistic choice gives the series a real touch. Certain scenes in motion comic give a real flavor to the series.

What if … Peggy Carter was Captain America?

More generally, the choice of animation (against live action) offers the writers real freedom in storytelling and combat: Captain Carter sends the Nazis waltzing in rather successful action scenes, reminiscent of comics.

To be completely transparent and for the pleasure of seeing our favorite Avengers on screen again, we would have liked What If to be live action (but we can imagine the cost!). Disney still played the game by calling on the original actors to double their character (except for Chris Evans, who does not double Steve Rogers in this episode).

In the end, this episode devoted to Peggy Carter is an interesting first appetizer but we clearly expect better from the next releases. We are told in the atrium that the second will center on T’Challa aka Black Panther, who in an alternate reality takes the place of Star-Lord alongside the Ravagers. An original promise that already makes our mouths water, especially since it is the late Chadwick Boseman who lends him his voice …
