Marvel on Disney+: 5 things to know about The Punisher series

Ordered after “Daredevil”, “Jessica Jones”, “Luke Cage” and “Iron Fist”, the series “The Punisher” also recently left Netflix for Disney+. The opportunity to (re)discover the Marvel series through 5 essential information.

Introduced in Season 2 of Daredevil under the guise of Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead, The Wolf of Wall Street), Frank Castle aka the Punisher then flew on its own for two seasons on Netflix. While the series is now available on Disney +, we give you 5 anecdotes about this explosive project.

It’s a Daredevil spin-off.

In 2013, Netflix and Disney announced an unprecedented deal involving four Marvel superheroes (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and iron fist) whose individual adventures were going to be adapted for the streaming platform before being brought together in an event mini-series, The Defenders.

Finally, all these shows were entitled to two or even three seasons, in particular the one devoted to Matt Murdock (charlie cox) which introduces other key characters from the Maison des Idées in season 2: Elektra Natchios (Elodie Yung) and the famous Frank Castle, who quickly enjoyed great popularity which allowed him to be offered his own series.

Of all the characters featured in Netflix’s Marvel series, the Punisher is the only one to have been the subject of a spin-off!

Frank Castle in Daredevil.

The most violent of the Marvel series…

If Daredevil already did not skimp on violence, the cursor has gone up a notch with The Punisher. The series is as brutal and bloodthirsty as its hero broken by the loss of his family and embodied by a Jon Bernthal more inhabited than ever. Certain combat and torture sequences are particularly hard to watch and some saw gratuitous violence in the show, which the showrunner had denied Steve Lightfoot at the time.

For me, it was clear that we could not make a non-violent series on the Punisher. But we show what the price of this violence is. We make it real and we don’t take it lightly. We had to show Frank pay for it, so he wouldn’t get away with it. He suffers physically and emotionally after each of these scenes“, he had thus declared to vulnerability.

…and the most popular!

With its very, very dark atmosphere, its hero as charismatic as it is touching – whose outbursts of violence are an outlet to externalize his pain – and its controlled production, The Punisher was very well received by critics and the French public. Released last, the series has surpassed Jessica Jones et al in the hearts of fans.

In December 2019, she was even tenth of the top of the best series of the decade according to the notes of Internet users of AlloCiné, ahead of Daredevil, then in fourteenth place. Even today, the two shows pull the plug with 4.3/5 stars each, against 4 for Jessica Jones, 3.9 for The Defenders, 3.8 for Luke Cage and 3.4 for Iron Fist.

It’s the only series in the franchise without Claire Temple.

Claire Temple in Luke Cage.

The only constant of all the Marvel series produced by Netflix, Claire Temple does not appear in The Punisher. Performed by Rosario Dawsonthis night nurse introduced in Daredevil and who helps superheroes on many occasions is indeed present in all the series adapted from the House of Ideas except the one centered on Frank Castle.

If the one who has a romantic relationship with Luke Cage does not pass her head in The Punisher, it is however the case of Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), who shares a very nice relationship with the vigilante with expeditious methods.

Jon Bernthal, 4th Punisher of the screens

If the interpretation of Jon Bernthal in Punisher marked the fans of the character, it is not the first actor to slip into the skin of the veteran ready to do anything to avenge his family. Far from it, since the anti-hero has already been entitled to… three films!

Dolph Lundgren portrayed Frank Castle in Punisher in 1989, Thomas Jane did the same in The Punisher in 2004 and Ray Stevenson portrayed the character in Punisher – War Zonereleased directly to DVD in 2009. Three feature films that are far from being masterpieces and that Marvel would surely prefer to forget

In 2011, a series Punisher also almost appeared on FOX but the project never materialized, making Bernthal the only Frank Castle on the small screen.
