Oscar winner thanks to “Nomadland”, Chloe Zhao is expected this year in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with “Eternals”. While waiting for the first images, Kevin Feige spoke about his work with the director.
2021, year of the big gap for Chloé Zhao. On April 25, the filmmaker became the second woman to win the Oscar for Best Director thanks to Nomadland, who won the statuette for Best Film and Best Actress (Frances McDormand) at the same time.
On November 3, she will be illustrated in the juggernaut of blockbusters: the Marvel Cinematic Universe, of which she signed one of the next opus, Eternals. Either the fight of an ancient race of human beings to protect the Earth from Deviants and, for the viewer, a dive into the cosmic pan of the MCU.
Yet it is Black Widow that the director almost got hold of, when she herself approached Marvel to work with them, as Kevin Feige reveals in an interview with Variety. She will eventually turn to Eternals, whose screenplay she co-wrote with Matthew K. Firpo and Ryan Firpo, and the studio president calls her vision “spectacular”.
A vision that Chloé Zhao sometimes had to fight to impose, and especially with regard to the filming locations, since she wanted to focus, as much as possible, on natural sets in the studio. The director not only won her case, but the result was impressive, like these extracts presented to the big bosses of Disney.
“I had to repeat to them ‘This is what the camera captured, there is not the slightest special effect!'”, explains Kevin Feige. “There was a beautiful sunset, with perfect waves and mist rising from the shore towards this giant cliff. [Lorsque j’ai vu Nomadland], I understood that was not just what she wanted to bring to Marvel. It’s his signature! “
A signature that Chloé Zhao was able to develop on a larger scale, obtaining the ability to work with a smaller team: “From the start they knew how I wanted to make this film and shoot it”, explains the Oscar-winning filmmaker. “There couldn’t be hundreds of people all around the set. So they adapted their way of handling it to what I wanted to work with. I’m still surrounded by 25 people. They have armies, and each of them. between them knew he had to keep the army away. “
“I want to be careful when talking about ‘my vision’, even though I want people to know that they supported what I wanted to do. I want people to know that. But also to make sure that they have supported what I wanted to do. knowing that I was supported by this incredibly talented team, with some of the most talented artists in the world. It really takes a whole village to make a film, but they let me lead it. “
Led by an international cast, which will rub shoulders with Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan, Brian Tyree Henry, Kumail Nanjiani, Ma Dong-Seok and two Game of Thrones alumni (Richard Madden and Kit Harington), Eternals will stage the first openly gay superhero from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as a deaf character.
Next meeting with Marvel at the cinema: July 7 alongside “Black Widow”
