The announcement is not long in coming. Disney + and Marvel took advantage of Loki’s final season and the post-credits scene to surprise fans: Loki will return in season 2.
Warning this article contains spoilers on episode 6 of Loki.
Until now, the Disney + series from Marvel Studios had been thought of as stand alone, with only one season to deepen a character and develop it for a sequel to the cinema. But Loki is an exception since the House of Ideas has just announced that there will be a season 2 centered on the God of Malice. A rumor that had been circulating for a few months already but which was only confirmed in the post-credits scene of the final season.
It must be said that unlike WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the last episode of Loki did not fully resolve the plot, on the contrary. The God of Malice played by Tom Hiddleston and his variant Sylvie (Sophia di Martino) managed to find the man behind the TVA.
So this is Kang the Conqueror, or rather a rather sympathetic version of the villainous Marvel played by Jonathan Majors. But their meeting led to the creation of the multiverse and the certain return of a war between realities, which is precisely what Kang tried to prevent.
Loki is meanwhile sent to a multiverse in which the Conqueror also controls VAT, but he does not live in hiding. This is why Mobius did not recognize the Asgardian when the latter tried to warn him of what was to come …
What consequence for the MCU?
It is not yet clear when this season 2 of Loki will be released on Disney + but one thing is certain: the series has set the stage for the next MCU films. Starting with Doctor Strange 2, titled In The Multiverse of Madness.
If there is anyone to try to correct the Loki’s mistake, it is our Sorcerer Supreme who owns the Time Stone. He can count on the help of Wanda aka Scarlet Witch for this, even if the latter will try to find her missing children somewhere in an alternate reality.
Loki could also have an impact on Spider-Man 3: No Way Home. Even though Marvel has dashed fans’ hopes with its latest announcements, the creation of the multiverse adds to the rumor surrounding the previous Spider-Man iterations appearing in theaters. Fingers crossed that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield make an appearance in the MCU.
What about Kang in all of this?
Kang, however, is unlikely to be the big villain of Doctor Strange 2 and Spider-Man 3 since the MCU’s new villain is expected to make his next appearance in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, slated for February 2023. And he s ‘will act this time as a much more belligerent version of the character.
In the comics, Kang is one of the Avengers’ greatest enemies and has traveled so far in time and space that he has created several variants of himself …
