A SHOCK AND DARK DRAMA
Awarded at the Venice Film Festival in 2019 in the Horizons section as best director, the Chilean filmmaker Theo Court signs an oppressive and hard-hitting film with white on white, available from May 12 exclusively on FILMO.
With this drama, his second feature film after Ocaso, he lifts the veil on a dark chapter in history: the genocide of the Selk’nam (also known as Onas), an indigenous people settled in Tierra del Fuego in southern Chile. A massacre of a population that has now disappeared, told through the eyes of a photographer who witnessed this violence and this suffering.
It was by discovering real photographs of the extermination of the Selk’nam, at the hands of the men of the wealthy owner Julius Popper, that the idea for this film was born in the mind of the director. The latter, driven by the question of representation and staging by the perpetrators, highlights here the use of images as a tool of power, as he entrusted it in 2021.
This feature film, candidate for the Oscar for best foreign film for Chile in 2022, was particularly praised by the filmmaker and screenwriter Pablo Larrain (spencer), which describes it as “really interesting, strange and extremely violent” as reported variety.
