House of the dragon: why one of the key characters of the novels is missing

Among the many Game of Thrones spin-offs in the works, House of the Dragon is the one that will land the first on the screens, in 2022 on HBO. Set 170 years before the events of the original series, the action will focus on the origins of the clan Targaryen and the civil war of succession called the Dance of the Dragons.

In the list of characters already announced for this new project, fans ofwork of George RR Martin will recognize familiar names, such as the princess Rhaenyra Targaryen – played by Emma D’Arcy -, Alicent Hightower – played by Olivia Cooke -, her father, Otto Hightower – camped by Rhys Ifans -, or Daemon Targaryen – brought to the screen by actor Matt Smith. But one of the main heroes of the novels, Aegon Targaryen, does not appear in the first information revealed.

Eldest son of Aerion Targaryen and Valaena Velaryon, he is also nicknamed the Conqueror and happens to be one of the contenders for the Iron Throne. Logically, the plot of House of the dragon also tells its story.

However, no actor has been officially announced to play it. The first season of this prequel will take place a few years before the Dance of the Dragons – which begins when Aegon Targaryen is only 23 years old.

This chapter, which opens the pages of another story, should focus more on its halfsister and main adversary, Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), from her early years to adulthood, while Aegon Targaryen could appear as a child. If the success is at the rendezvous, it will probably be necessary to wait until the second season before seeing Aegon Targaryen take more importance.
