Hôtel Transylvanie is broadcast this evening in French on TF1. In the original version, Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg, Kevin James and Steve Buscemi lend their voices to the monstrous characters from Genndy Tartakovsky’s film. But did you recognize the French voices?
Does Dracula’s voice mean anything to you? If you are a fan of Adam Sandler – and watch the films in French – this is normal since it is none other than Serge Faliu, actor, dubbing actor and regular French voice of Sandler who doubles the Director of the Transylvania hotel . The French actor has lent his voice to the American actor in more than 34 films. He also voiced Charlie Sheen, Chris Tucker, James Marsters, Kal Penn, Ike Barinholtz, Keegan-Michael Key and Eddie Murphy in The San Francisco Cop.
During the graphic creation of the character Dracula, the vocal performance of Adam Sandler had a direct influence: “Thanks to the way Adam interprets the character, Dracula really imposes some, but he can also be very silent and very calm. And that shows through in its physical aspect. It looks a bit like an upside down triangle, narrow at the bottom of the body and wide at the top – it’s a type of almost 2.15 meters with an imposing presence. But thanks to the way character designer Craig Kellman designed it, he can sort of turn in on himself to become this tender and moving man, smaller than we imagine“Producer Michelle Murdocca explains. So it seemed logical to keep the same range of voices and offer the official voice actor Adam Sandler to take over the role.
The “young” Mavis (118 years old all the same), Drac’s daughter, is for her part voiced by a popular actress since it is Virginie Efira who lends her beautiful tone of voice to the little vampire in the French version. The Belgian actress is not for the first time since she also voiced Jennifer Love Hewitt in Garfield, the film (2004), Piper in the animated film Robots (2005), the cat Katy in Max & Co and especially Kitty Pattes de Velours in the Puss in Boots from Dreamworks studios, released 1 year before Hôtel Transylvanie. As a reminder, in the original version it is Selena Gomez who plays Mavis.
Jonathan, Frank, the invisible man and the werewolf
Jonathan, the human with whom Mavis falls in love, is voiced by Alex Goude. The TV presenter had already participated in the dubbing of Giant Dumpling Tempest (where he lent his voice to … TV presenter) and then made a voice in the animation series Lanfeust Quest adapted from the homonymous comic strip. He is the actor Andy Samberg who lends her voice to the character in the American version.
Voice-over actor Xavier Fagnon lends his voice to Frank, Frankenstein’s Monster (Kevin James in VO). He is the regular French voice of Seth Rogen, Rob Corddry, Matthew Fox, Michael Weatherly (NCIS) and has lent his voice to Jude Law in 6 films including the Sherlock Holmes or to Hugh Jackman in The Greatest Showman, Van Helsing or even Prestige.
William Coryn doubles the Invisible Man (David Spade in the United States), he is the French voice of Jackie Chan and has lent his voice, on several occasions, to James Spader, Matthew Broderick and Michael Sheen. William Coryn also doubles 2 characters in the animated series South Park (Kenny McCormick and Kyle Broflovski). He is also artistic director and adapter.
Interpreted by Steve Buscemi in the original version, Wayne, the werewolf is dubbed by Guillaume Lebon in French. Very active in dubbing, the actor was the voice of Paul Walker and lent his range to David Thewlis, Peter Sarsgaard, Eric McCormack or Sam Rockwell. He is also the voice of the rat Rémi in Ratatouille and of L in the anime Death Note.
