Hawkeye’s fifth episode opens with a flashback to Yelena (Florence Pugh). As she did with her sister Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) in the movie Black Widow, Yelena continues to hunt down every manipulated black widow in the world to administer an antidote and set them free.

In this same flashback from the beginning, we understand that Yelena was also touched by Thanos’ “Blip” and that she evaporated for 5 years. She reappears in the same house without understanding what is happening to her. She who wanted to find her sister will not have had time to say goodbye to her before she sacrifices herself to save humanity.

SPOILER ATTENTION – A reference to Spider-Man: No Way Home

Yelena finds Kate Bishop and prepares her macaroni for a little girl’s meal. A way for the black widow to chat with the archer and make him understand that she is there to kill Clint. Yelena explains that this is her first time in New York and that she would like to take the time to visit some of the city’s historic places.

She quotes in particular “the new Statue of Liberty” and the latter can be seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which has just been released in theaters. In the film, we see the Statue of Liberty in full construction with Captain America’s shield instead of the torch. With the Hawkeye series set after the third installment of Spider-Man in the MCU timeline, work on the Statue must be completed.

Natasha’s sacrifice and Yelena’s contract

Also during their discussion, Yelena tries to make Kate understand that her sister Natasha died because of Clint and that he is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people. It was Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), seen in Falcon and the Winter Soldier, who shared this “information” with her in the post-credits scene of Black Widow. Yelena would therefore have joined the band of mercenaries formed by Valentina with the US Agent (Wyatt Russell) since she reveals that she is fulfilling a contract to kill Clint.

Clint goes to the Battle of New York Memorial, the heart of the first Avengers movie, which brought together the six superheroes for the first time: Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Hulk, Thor and Hawkeye. It is in front of this building that Clint pays homage to Natasha and speaks to her friend, always with her in her thoughts and in her heart.

Kate has been a fan of Hawkeye since the Battle of New York where the Avenger saved her, as we discovered in the first episode of the series.

The Ronin Returns

Clint reunites with Maya (Alaqua Cox) to put an end to his vendetta. He finds her dressed as Ronin, that killer identity he had assumed during the five years when half the population had disappeared because of the Thanos snap.

Clint and manipulation

While chatting with Maya, Clint reveals his face to her and threatens her. He explains to her that they are not that different, that they are weapons and that they can be used and manipulated. Clint refers to the fact that he was manipulated by Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and his staff in the first Avengers movie.

The return of the Kingpin!

The “big guy” that Clint dreaded so much and who put a contract on his head is none other than the Kingpin! This is what the photo taken by Yelena and sent to Kate reveals. And it is Vincent D’Onofrio, who already played this character in the Daredevil series, who is resuming his role. Something to delight fans, already excited by the latest statements from Kevin Feige, the boss of Marvel Studios, who has confirmed that Charlie Cox’s Daredevil has been confirmed in the MCU.
