Danish comedian Mads Mikkelsen, recently starring in “Drunk”, has been approached to reprise the role of dark mage Grindelwald in the magical saga after Johnny Depp’s departure.
The news rocked the Wizarding World at the end of last week: Johnny Depp ousting from the sequel to the Fantastic Beasts franchise, commissioned by the producers of Warner Bros. While the third part is filmed in London, and the American actor had only taken over one day (and the time of a scene) the costume of Gellert Grindelwald, his replacement would have already been identified by the director David Yates.
Thus, according to Variety and Deadline, Mads Mikkelsen is reportedly currently being courted by the production to reprise the role of the Dark Mage. The name of Colin Farrell, who had lent his appearance to the character before the final twist of the first installment of the franchise that revealed the face of Johnny Depp, had a time – and logically – been put forward by fans to find the character. It is however the Danish actor, recently seen in Drunk, who would have the favors of the studio.
If the commitment of Mads Mikkelsen was confirmed he would add a major new pop-culture franchise to his filmography, having appeared in James Bond (Casino Royale), Star Wars (Rogue One) and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Doctor Strange). The actor had also played Hannibal Lecter in the Hannibal series, where his relationship with the profile Will Graham could draw what we can expect from the relationship between Gellert Grindelwald and Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) in Fantastic Beasts 3.
Still led by Eddie Redmayne, the feature film is written by JK Rowling. Will the novelist explain the change in appearance of Grindelwald in this third adventure or not? Response in July 2022 in theaters.
