First steps in music …
Born in January 1987 in London to Nigerien parents, Cynthia Erivo studied psychology before joining the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She made her stage debut at 23 in the musical piece Marine Parade and participates in the musical Sister Act. In 2013 she was chosen to play Celie in the musical The Color Purple, a role for which she received rave reviews and which earned her numerous awards including a Grammy Award as lead soloist on the album from the musical.
A year later she participates in the play I Can’t Sing! The X Factor Musical and made his first foray into cinema by performing the title Fly Before You Fall for the film Beyond the Lights by Gina Prince-Bythewood. The actress and singer then illustrated – always on the boards – in the classics Dream of a summer night by Shakespeare and Henry IV directed by Phyllida Lloyd with an all-female cast.
From boards to the big screen
In 2018 this complete artist took her first steps in the cinema in Dirty Times at the El Royal Hotel by Drew Goddard, she naturally played the role of a soul singer who had come to spend the night in this very special hotel. His powerful and suave voice resonates in the hotel and seems to hypnotize his infrequent clients (Jeff Bridges and Dakota Johnson) by resuming the flagship titles of the 60s like This Old Heart Of Mine by The Isley Brothers.
A few weeks after the release of this thriller, Cynthia Erivo is in the cast of Steve McQueen’s new film, The Widows. In this feminist and feminist heist film, the actress gives the answer to Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez and Elizabeth Debicki, in a role more muscular than singing.
She then co-stars Doug Liman’s sci-fi thriller Chaos Walking with Daisy Ridley and David Oyelowo, and starred as Harriet (Kasi Lemmons), a biopic telling the story of Harriet Tubman, famous activist for the abolition of slavery who helped escape hundreds of slaves in the southern United States after having escaped herself in 1849. She is competing for the Oscar for best original song with “Stand Up“that she comes to defend on stage.
She returns in 2020 to television by appearing in The Outsider, the series adapted from the novel by Stephen King where she plays an investigator. A secondary role that does not prevent it from shining. The same year, she was chosen to play singer Aretha Franklin in season 3 of Genius.
