Free Guy is full of references to the world of video games but also to pop culture, not to mention tasty cameos. Discover five anecdotes about the film!
Directed by Shawn Levy with Ryan Reynolds headlining, Free Guy will delight fans of video games, but not only! The film is indeed populated with nods to pop culture and brings together faces well known to the public.
STARS MAKE VOICE CAMEOS
If you watch Free Guy in the original version, a few voices might be familiar to you! Indeed, Ryan Reynolds invited some of his famous friends to give voice for small roles, including Hugh Jackman. The latter, with whom Reynolds maintains a funny (fake) rivalry on social networks, doubles the masked player that Molotovgirl meets and kills at the start of the film for asking too many questions. The interpreter of Wolverine had also already shot for Shawn Levy in Real Steel.
Tina Fey, who has also previously shot under the direction of the director in Crazy Night, lends her voice to Keith’s mother (Matty Cardarople) whose vacuum cleaner interrupts the player’s stream. We also find in the credits, John Krasinski who doubles another gamer and Dwayne Johnson who lends his voice to one of the robbers of the bank where Ryan Reynolds’ character works, Guy. The two actors had already played a role in Hobbs & Shaw and will soon share the Netflix movie poster, Red Notice.
TAIKA WAITITI HAS IMPROVISED MOST OF HER REPLICAS
During a press conference, Shawn Levy revealed that Taika Waititi, who plays the unfriendly but funny Antwan, improvised many of his lines on the set. “There is a montage of Taika Waititi’s improvisations. Literally I think it’s about 39 minutes”, Revealed the director. And to add: “I forced myself to shorten it to 1min30 so that it could be posted on social media. But, one day, it will have to be shared with the world because it was a level of improvisation that I have rarely, rarely, rarely seen!” The proof in video :
APPEARANCES FROM FAMOUS YOUTUBERS
To anchor his film in reality, Shawn Levy called on several Internet personalities specializing in video games. Streamer and Youtuber Imane “Pokimane” Anys, Youtubeur Lannan “LazarBeam” Eacott, Videographer Seán William “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin, Streamer and Youtubeur Tyler “Ninja” Blevins and Player and Youtubeur Daniel “DanTDM” Middleton all appear in Free Guy.
A LITTLE STRANGER THINGS IN THE FILM
If Shawn Levy had not directed a feature film since Night at the Museum: The Secret of the Pharaohs in 2015, the filmmaker has not been idle. He simply devoted himself to his production company 21 Laps with which he notably produced Premier Contact, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. But also the hit series Stranger Things, of which he also directed a few episodes.
To interpret one of the main characters of Free Guy, the director naturally called on one of his foals from the series: Joe Keery. The one who plays the high school student Steve Harrington in the Netflix production here plays Keys, a talented computer scientist, close to Millie (Jodie Comer).
A CHARACTER FROM THE FILM HAS THE RIGHT TO HIS SKIN IN FORTNITE
If you liked Free Guy and you are a fan of the Fortnite multiplatform game, know that you can get at the end of a quest the skin of a character from the feature film. It’s not about the hero, Guy, but his much more muscular and less intelligent double: Dude.
A crossover – which will last until September 6 – which makes complete sense for a work that pays such homage to the world of video games. Moreover, the Masse Fluo pickaxe from the game developed by Epic Games appears in the film, just like other cult objects seen in various games such as Half-Life, Halo or Portal.
