Fast & Furious 8: several tributes to Paul Walker are hidden in the film

Broadcast tonight on TF1, “Fast & Furious 8” is the first part of the franchise to be produced after the death of Paul Walker in 2013. But if Brian O’Conner is absent from the feature film, several tributes are paid to him in the movie.

November 2013. 40-year-old Paul Walker – star of the Fast & Furious saga who shared the wheel of this cinematic car with Vin Diesel since the very first installment – tragically dies in a car accident.

In order to complete the filming of Fast & Furious 7, and in particular the sequences in which the actor was yet to participate, the production decided to call on Caleb and Cody Walker, the actor’s two brothers, and to retouch their faces digitally.

Thus, in the moving final sequence of the feature film, we can see Brian O’Conner (the character played by Paul Walker) bow and bid farewell to Dominic Toretto, as the roads of the two heroes.

Released in theaters two years after the seventh part (and broadcast this evening on TF1), Fast & Furious 8 is therefore notably marked by the absence of the character of Paul Walker. A great void left by the actor, which the film crew tried to fill as much as possible, thanks to several tributes included in the feature film:

  • In the final sequence, Dominic Toretto announces to his teammates that he has decided to name his son Brian (in reference to Brian O’Conner). A tribute that Vin Diesel has also repeated in reality, since he called his daughter Pauline, in tribute to Paul Walker.
  • At the start of the film, Dom Toretto uses a can of soda to tinker with a turbo for his car. A trick he says he learned from a certain Buster (in French, Blondinet), the nickname he gave to Brian.

  • When Little Nobody (played by Scott Eastwood) announces to team members their position in Interpol’s Top 10 Most Wanted, he mentions numbers 6, 8, 9 and 10. But he seems to omit the 7, which one can imagine corresponding to Brian, the seventh installment of the Fast & Furious saga being the last in which it appears.
  • Finally, in the hangar where the heroes meet to prepare their mission, we can see a Nissan GT-R, the car Brian drove in the previous film.
