Dominic Toretto: In full promotion of Fast & Furious 9, Vin Diesel announced to the site Vulture, that a spin-off centered on his character would be possible.
In Fast & Furious 9, in theaters on July 14, Dom will have to face the demons of his past. His team comes together to dismantle a plot led by the most relentless killer they’ve ever faced, as fearsome with a weapon as they are behind a wheel: Dom’s disowned brother Jakob (John Cena).
The opportunity to expand the Toretto family and return to the story of the hero of the franchise. The ninth part also presents several flashbacks in which we see Dom and Jakob children and young adults (Vinnie Benett plays Dom while Finn Cole is young Jakob).
In his interview, Vin Diesel specifies that episodes 10 and 11, which will be shot simultaneously, will focus more on the history of the Toretto family by developing the past of the character’s father and mother.
The actor and producer then announced that a spin-off or prequel centered on his character was a possibility. As a reminder, a film centered on Toretto had already been considered several years ago (at the time of Fast & Furious 4) but the actor had preferred to focus on the main franchise.
The latter specifies today “I think the Toretto story they wanted to make may still exist in the future.”
The universe of Fast will continue
It was known that the producers were already planning to release several spinoff films of the Mother Saga and continue the Hobbs & Shaw story, so it seems logical that a Toretto-centric film would be considered again. Vin Diesel nevertheless specifies that it is time for the main saga to be concluded.
“The ending comes because every good story needs an ending, because every book you’ve read has a final chapter, because that’s the very nature of storytelling.
I’m sure there are people out there who would like Fast to go on and on and on. The universe of Fast will continue, clearly, and there will be different stories that will be played out in the future. But as far as this mythology goes, I think we owe it to the fans – to give them the end.”
If a solo Dominic Toretto film ever does see the light of day, then the story will most likely take place before the events of the first Fast & Furious. In that case, will Vin Diesel still be in the cast or will Vinnie Benett, who plays him young in Fast & Furious 9, reprise the role for a solo film focused on Dom’s youth? To be continued …
