What is it about ?

Everything Can Change is a documentary that reveals what lies behind one of the aberrations of the American film industry: the under-representation of women in Hollywood. Director Tom Donahue highlights decades of discrimination against women behind and in front of the camera, thanks in particular to a novel method of studying numerical data, supported by hundreds of damning testimonies.

Why is it worth the detour?

Very rich in data, archives and film extracts, the strength of the film rests above all on its testimonies. The film gives to hear many and prestigious voices of Hollywood which carry, of Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Reese Witherspoon, Sandra Oh, Jessica Chastain, Chloë Grace Moretz, Shonda Rhimes, or even Geena Davis. The latter, also executive producer of the film, highlights what can and must change.

Beyond the observations, the film indeed offers avenues and solutions. It particularly highlights the work of the Geena Davis Institute, presented as the only research organization in the media and entertainment sector that seeks to combat inequalities between men and women and sexist stereotypes. The Institute has been building the largest database on male dominance in the entertainment industry for over 20 years.

Met by AlloCiné on the occasion of the American Festival of Deauville, Geena Davis had spoken about the after. To the question, “are things changing in Hollywood”, here is his answer: “One thing has changed: today, it is possible to talk about these inequalities. It’s more on people’s minds since #MeToo, Time’s Up or Trump. This is an important change that can create others by getting people to talk to each other about subjects such as equal pay for example.

Before that happened, you couldn’t have complained about your salary because there is bound to be someone paid less (laughs) No way. But now there is Gillian anderson who discovers that she receives half of what David duchovny key, which raises its voice, and which gets the same. It’s a huge change. We also see it in other sectors of society, in women’s football in particular: we are in an era where more attention is paid to these things. So we will see other changes. The liberation of women dates back to the 70s, it is time for another.
