Tesla is increasing the price of its self-driving option on its electric vehicles worldwide starting from an increase of $ 1,000 (£ 820).

Founder Elon Musk tweeted that the price “will continue to rise” as its technology improves.

But the entrepreneur said the technology he is adding will be worth more than $ 100,000.

Musk has been in a battle with officials in California over the restart of Tesla’s US auto assembly.

Tesla’s “full self-driving” (FSD) option is called Autopilot, although it is not fully autonomous. The autopilot has a number of features including automatic lane changes, parallel parking and a summoning feature, which automatically parks and retrieves the car. Its upcoming features include automatic traffic light and stop sign control.

The self-driving option will cost $ 8,000 when the price hike starts on July 1st.

“The price of the FSD will continue to rise as the software approaches full autonomous driving capability with regulatory approval,” Musk said in a series of tweets on Monday. “[At] at that point, the FSD value is probably somewhere above $ 100,000. ”

Tesla was investigated by regulators in the United States after a pilot was killed while using autopilot in 2018. However, the investigation found that the driver was playing a video game on his smartphone at the time of the accident.

Musk is famous for his frequent tweets, many of which got him in trouble.

A tweet earlier this month canceled $ 14 billion from Tesla’s market value after Musk wrote that his share price was too high.

His latest tweets have also caused little controversy online, with some doubts about the value of $ 100,000 or more claiming that self-driving software will be worth the effort.

One response stated that Musk’s value that the standalone package was “crazy”. “Elon, real talk, I love you and the mission, but FSD will never be worth so much,” added the tweet.

The best-selling Tesla Model 3 currently sells for $ 33,690 in the United States if a driver opts for the base package. With Autopilot this would currently cost $ 40,690.
