Strong, abrasive and cheeky – Dr Disrespect was one of Twitch’s most popular streamers.

Armed with a unique combination of mullet, mustache and sunglasses, he has created an audience of almost four million followers on the site.

Earlier this year the character – played by a former game developer called Herschel ‘Guy’ Beahm – even signed a multi-million pound contract for exclusive streaming on the site.

Then suddenly on June 26 his channel closed.

Fans have speculated on social media ever since. Did he break the law? Inappropriate behavior? Or copyright infringement?

Twitch shared the same statement he made online with Radio 1 Newsbeat: “We take appropriate measures when we have evidence that a streamer has acted in violation of our Community Guidelines or Terms of Service.”

They didn’t say anything else about the case, but given how fundamental it is to the platform, we expect older people from the company to take care of it.

In the last few days the pressure on the streaming site has increased to intensify his response to the streamers accused of sexual abuse, harassment or use of racist language, although at the moment there is no indication that such accusations have been made regarding dr. Disrespect.

Last week, some organized a protest that saw streamers stay off the platform for a day to raise awareness of these issues.

Twitch has started banning accounts, saying it is reviewing cases “as quickly as possible” and adding that it will issue permanent suspensions for some users.

Disrespect says he hasn’t been told why his stream wasn’t closed either.

“Twitch did not inform me of the specific reason behind his decision.

“Balance handshakes at all for support during this difficult time,” he said.

His wife also posted on Instagram to thank his community for their support.

Other accounts have been removed

Brad Jolly, who was streamed as BlessRNG, removed his channel from the site after being accused of sexual abuse.

He released a statement saying, “I have done offensive things without thinking directly, and I hate doing it.

“Holding abusers accountable. This includes me.”

The website’s actions follow a huge online discussion in the gaming industry.

Many people who work in games have publicly shared their experiences of sexual abuse.

Recently Twitch streamers have had to get rid of old clips that may have violated copyright law due to the way music was used in them.

It is unclear at this time whether copyright concerns could underlie the website’s actions with Dr Disrespect.

Their statement states that the rules and terms of service apply “to all streamers regardless of status or community prominence”.

Dr Disrespect is no stranger to controversy having been suspended by Twitch in 2019 after broadcasting live on the site from inside the public toilets.

In the past he has also been criticized for his characterization of Chinese accents, some claim that he was racist, something he strongly denied.
