District 9: Neill Blomkamp gives a clue on the plot of the sequel, District 10
Last March, Neill Blomkamp revealed to us that he was working on the sequel to his cult film District 9. The filmmaker again comes out of his silence to give some small details on the progress of the project.
In 2009, Neill Blomkamp released his first feature film, District 9. Barely 30 years old, the filmmaker brought new blood to the SF genre, promising himself to be one of the most promising directors of his generation.
His film was a hit, bringing in $ 210 million in worldwide revenue for a budget of $ 30 million. Unfortunately, the South African struggled to transform the test, chaining several failures in a row with Elysium or Chappie.
Blomkamp then moves away from film sets, also failing in his desire to stage an episode of the Alien saga. In 2021, the director seems determined to relaunch with the District 10 project, unveiled last March.
If the development of the sequel took more than 10 years, it’s because we couldn’t find the right idea.
The filmmaker is still developing the scenario, supported by Terri Tatchell and Sharlto Copley, hero of the first part. Asked by IGN, Blomkamp spoke of the long wait between District 9 and its sequel. “District 10 is still being written, it’s progressing well”, he confided.
“If the development took more than 10 years, it’s because we didn’t know which way to take this story, we couldn’t find the right idea. It took all this time to find a good reason. to make the film without it being just a vulgar sequel “, adds the filmmaker.
Blomkamp also provided a little clue on the plot of this second opus. If District 9 focused on South African history and in particular Apartheid, District 10 will draw its inspiration from the United States.
There is a major subject in American history that resonates in the universe of District 10.
“There is a major subject in American history that resonates with the universe of District 10 and that totally blends into it. The second I understood it, I knew I had a great reason. to do this sequel. We’re still working on it, we’re almost there “, concludes Neill Blomkamp.
So what is this American historical theme evoked by the director? We will have to wait a little longer to find out more. In the meantime, the South African has directed Demonic, a scary sci-fi thriller that will be released on August 20 in the USA. Is this the start of the resurrection for Blomkamp?
