Despite the controversy around the representation of its seven dwarfs, it seems that the next adaptation of Snow White has found the one who will play the grumpiest of them…
Few months ago, Peter Dinklageknown for his role as Tyrion in Game Of Thrones, violently criticized the future live-action film of Snow White, in preparation at Disney. He then pointed the finger at the “hypocrisy” of the studio wanting to be “progressive” for having chosen a Latina actress for the title role but still continuing with “this fucking backward story where seven dwarfs live together in a cave.”
Disney later announced that a new approach would be taken, different from the 1937 classic. The production then talked about replacing the seven dwarfs with “magical creatures”, a decision which in turn caused many to sink. ink and aroused a new controversy.
But a new twist in the Snow White saga: During a recent appearance at Denver’s annual Fan Expo (via TheDisInsider), the star of Pirates of the Caribbean, Martin Klebba, confirmed his participation in the feature film in question. The actor thus joins the cast of the film carried by Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot as Grumpy, one of the classic tale’s seven dwarfs, a character voiced by Pinto Colvig in the original animated film.
In addition to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Martin Klebba has also appeared in a number of fantasy films such as Men in Black II, The Looney Tunes take action, The fantastic world of Oz and especially another Snow Whitethat of 2012 with Lily Collins and Julia Roberts.
BACK TO THE CLASSIC VERSION
The next Disney adaptation meanwhile will be based on Disney’s first-ever animated classic, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, released more than 80 years ago, the very one that was the starting point for the success of the famous studio. The film will also be inspired by the German fairy tale of 1812, written by the Grimm brothers.
The story of Snow White is obviously that of a young princess exiled to a dangerous forest by her wicked stepmother, jealous of her beauty. Fortunately, she is quickly saved by seven dwarf miners who integrate her into their home. However, due to the stepmother’s desire to be the most beautiful of all, she tricks Snow White into eating a poisoned apple which will put the young woman into an endless sleep. For the curse to be broken, she must receive a real loving kiss – a non-consensual kiss which was also controversial last year. In its time, the original film was nominated for the Oscar for Best Score, while Walt Disney took home an honorary award.
In development since 2016, Blanche-Neige will benefit for its soundtrack from the musical talents of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul – the duo who signed the soundtracks of La La Land and The Greatest Showman –, from whom new songs have been commissioned. Directed and produced by Mark Webb from a screenplayErin Cressida Wilsonthe project should therefore expand the universe of the princess, on the story and music side, while production should begin shortly.
Snow White is part of Disney’s growing list of live-action adaptations alongside The little Mermaid, Hercules, Pinocchio and Peter Pan And Wendyas well as the sequels of Lion KingofAladdin and of cruella.
