Guillaume Lucchesi, in his thirties, thought he had drawn an end to the terrible drama during which the two beings he loved the most died: Sonia, his first love, and Fred, his brother. Ten years later, Judith, whose love allowed her to regain a taste for life, disappears during her mother’s funeral. To find her, Guillaume will have to face all the truths that his family have hidden from him, but also those that he has long since decided to ignore. For better, and especially for worse …

Gone Forever, a series created by Vincent Poymiro and David Elkaïm.

Available on Netflix

After the success of the Spanish series Innocent, the adaptations of the works of Harlan Coben continue on the Netflix side. In 2018, the author signed an exclusive contract with the platform to adapt 14 of his titles, into films or series, over a period of five years. With Gone forever, which brings to the screen the eponymous novel published in 2002, Cap on France. Vincent Poymiro and David Elkaïm, two of the feathers of In therapy, are at the controls of this plot which opens with a strange disappearance and continues with a succession of twists and turns.

The city of Nice is the scene of this thriller in which the main character, Guillaume, an ordinary young man, goes in search of the one he wanted to marry. Beyond its change of scenery, the series distances itself from the book in many aspects. It is all the interest of an adaptation which must, here, maintain a tension on 5 episodes. The creators offer a rhythmic story, punctuated by effective action scenes and a real sense of suspense. Nevertheless, the plot sometimes gets bogged down in its too many flashbacks. A structure that works more in a novel than on the screen.

Magali Bragard / Netflix

Guillaume Gouix and Finnegan Oldfield, hero of “Gone forever”“.

Gone forever Above all, it has an excellent cast which, despite very written dialogues, manages to convince and embark the spectator in this race against time. It is Finnegan Oldfield, nominated for the Caesar twice in 2016 and 2018, who embodies the main hero. More and more present on the screens, the actor delivers an interpretation without false note, just like his partners, in particular Guillaume Gouix and Garance Marillier, currently with the poster of Titane of Julia Ducournau.

At the crossroads of genres, between thriller, thriller and drama, both social and family, Gone forever has every chance to seduce Harlan Coben fans and those who put their cynicism aside to let themselves be carried away. A veritable labyrinth, never short of revelations of all kinds, the series is nothing revolutionary but keeps its promises for viewers already informed. Next upcoming adaptation: the Stay Close series with Richard Armitage, Cush Jumbo and James Nessbit.
