John Guillermin’s feature film, Death on the Nile (1978), airs tonight on Arte. Did you know that a new adaptation of the work of Agatha Christie by Kenneth Branagh is due out soon?
Death on the Nile by John Guillermin airs tonight on Arte. Released in our theaters in 1978, the feature film adapted from the work of Agatha Christie is directed by Peter Ustinov (Hercule Poirot), Jane Birkin, Bette Davis, Mia Farrow, Angela Lansbury, Maggie Smith, George Kennedy and David Niven.
In this film, the famous detective Hercule Poirot is traveling on the Nile. One evening, Jacqueline de Bellefort, whose best friend Linnet Ridgeway has just married the ex-fiancé, barges on the boat and shoots her former lover, injuring him in the leg.
Shocked by his gesture, she has a nervous breakdown, forcing the nurse who came to her bedside to administer a severe dose of morphine which knocks her out all night. The next day, Linnet’s lifeless body is discovered.
If Jacqueline, her sworn enemy, could not commit this crime, who is the author? Hercule Poirot will soon discover that each of the passengers had a good reason to kill her …
So far the feature film was the only adaptation of the novel on the big screen. But given the success of the 2017 version of Crime on the Orient Express by and starring Kenneth Branagh ($ 353 million at the world box office), the director quickly announces the construction of another film based on a novel by the famous British author: Death on the Nile.
Forty-three years later, Hercule Poirot is therefore preparing to embark on a new murderous cruise.
Yes but here it is … The release of the feature film, initially scheduled for December 2019, was postponed by Disney to February 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, then because of a sex scandal surrounding a of the main actors of this new version: Armie Hammer.
The latter is in fact currently under investigation for rape charges. A complaint was filed against the actor last March by a young woman whom Hammer would have met via social networks in 2016.
Armie Hammer: actor under investigation for rape
Evicted from all his projects (the action comedy Shotgun Stories, the thriller Billion Dollar Spy and the series The Offer on the backstage of the Godfather), the American actor plays one of the major roles of this Death on the Nile.
It is therefore difficult for the studio to cut its scenes and shoot reshoots with another actor would cost millions of dollars and would be impossible to organize given the schedules of the actor’s famous co-stars: Gal Gadot, Annette Bening, Rose Leslie, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Letitia Wright, Russell Brand or even Tom Bateman.
Postponing the film would therefore allow Disney to await the verdict of the investigation of which Armie Hammer is the subject. One of the solutions considered could be to completely renounce a theatrical release and prefer a broadcast on a streaming platform.
In which case, John Guillermin’s film will remain the only version on the big screen of one of Agatha Christie’s most widely read novels.
