Death can wait: this unexpected character steals the show from james bond!

In “Dying Can Wait”, there is of course Daniel Craig, who bows out as James Bond. Léa Seydoux. Rami Malek. But the unexpected star of the film, the one who steals the show from others, is Ana de Armas, alias Paloma.

On April 25, 2019, an announcement was made with great fanfare from Jamaica: failing to have a title, the 25th James Bond has a cast that throws it. Daniel Craig is obviously back for his last mission in 007’s tuxedo, Léa Seydoux is also back. And Rami Malek, freshly Oscar winner for Bohemian Rhapsody, is confirmed in the skin of the villain.

Among the newcomers of the film directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, one name attracts particular attention: that of Ana de Armas. Revealed to the general public by her role in Knock Knock opposite Keanu Reeves, the Cuban actress has since distinguished herself in War Dogs and – especially – Blade Runner 2049, the time of some disturbing scenes. Seeing her play the James Bond Girls therefore appears to be the logical continuation of her rise.

If the name of her character, Paloma, is revealed to us in the following weeks, the public must be satisfied with the few shots that highlight her in the first trailer, unveiled in December 2019. Images devoid of words but which suggest a mixture of glamor and efficiency in action in the woman who wields firearms with ease and has formidable footwork. All in an evening dress.

A promising first glimpse as Knives Out, a detective comedy by Rian Johnson released at the end of November 2019 in France, shows a beautiful alchemy between Daniel Craig and Ana de Armas, who only asks to be expressed once again. It will be in the James Bond universe. A little later than expected, the release having been postponed from April 2020 to October 2021. And less than one imagined.

As the trailers foretold, Paloma only appears in one sequence of Die Can Wait: the one in Cuba, where James attempts to retrieve Valdo Obruchev (David Dencik), captured by Safin’s men (Rami Malek). To carry out her mission, 007 teams up with a local CIA spy, and it’s a nice surprise that awaits both the hero and the spectator.

On paper, Paloma had everything to be a femme fatale, a James Bond Girl too quickly sacrificed or a character anything but credible, like the physicist played by Denise Richards in The World Is Not Enough. It is not, and it is perhaps in his writing that we find most the modern touch of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, creator of Fleabag called in reinforcement to refine the script. Especially on female characters.

On screen, the spy turns out to be sexy at first but not eager to end up in 007’s bed. She admires her however. A little too much, which gives it a funny, awkward and endearing side that stands out among the usual codes of the saga. Without the person losing their credibility afterwards, as Ana de Armas explains very well: “She’s very funny, there’s something bubbly about her. She’s playful, naive and messy, but she’s also knowledgeable, trained, and she knows what she’s doing.”, specifies the actress in the press kit.

“She’s very beautiful, but it’s not all about that. She knows Bond is important, but she’s really focused on her job. It was cool having to play all those variables. I don’t think people will expect a character like her. Paloma has something to say and thinks outside the box with her sense of humor and the way she behaves in relation to Bond. I had never seen such a character in screen. “

A brief passage, but intense and striking for the one who enters and leaves the story like a hurricane. And is unanimous, even among the disappointed with the film. The day after the French press screening, Ana de Armas’s name comes up regularly in tweets about the feature film. And systematically on the side of the qualities of Dying can wait, with requests for her to make her return to the saga, one way or another.

(“Ana de Armas is for me the absolute queen of Die Can Wait. She deserves a spin-off.”)

All the conditions are therefore met for the soon to be put into orbit of the actress, seen recently at Olivier Assayas (Cuban Network) and which is expected in three major projects: the erotic thriller Deep Waters with Ben Affleck. The action and spy film The Gray Man, directed by the Russo brothers for Netflix, where she will reconnect with the genre and reunite with Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, her respective partners in Blade Runner 2049 and Knives Out.

And finally Blonde, biopic on Marilyn Monroe adapted from the book by Joyce Carol Oates. Directed by Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James…), the film has been in the works for more than ten years and was first to be worn by Naomi Watts, then Jessica Chastain. It is finally Ana de Armas who inherited the role of this icon in the feature film expected in 2022 on Netflix and which promises to be particularly sulphurous according to the latest rumors of corridors.

If the identity of the next interpreter of James Bond may shake the Web over the next few months, it is little to get wet to bet that Ana de Armas will also talk about her. And not just because of 007.
