Warner Bros. has just canceled The Trench, the Aquaman spin-off to be produced by James Wan and the New Gods adaptation worn by director Ava DuVernay.

Warner Bros has just canceled two DC feature films: The Trench and New Gods. Announced in February 2019, The Trench was set to be an Aquaman spin-off centered on amphibious creatures spotted in the 2018 film.

The horror film was to be produced by James Wan, director of Aquaman 1 and 2. Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald had already written the screenplay, but the studio decided to stop production of the comic book adaptation in order to focus on the continuation of the adventures of the superhero played by Jason Momoa. However, the studio keeps the idea in its drawers.

More surprisingly, the cancellation of The New Gods, which director Ava DuVernay has been developing since 2018 with comic book author Tom King. Adapted from the work of the legendary Jack Kirby, New Gods was to center on the super-villain Darkseid and his group of devoted warriors, the Female Furies. The latter have regularly clashed with DC superheroes in attacks commanded by the Despot of Apokolips.

But the presence of Darkseid in the recent Justice League of Zack Snyder complicated the situation since the studio wants to space the appearance of the characters between the various films of the DC universe.

Warner and DC have therefore preferred to end the adaptation of New Gods for the moment. The studio does not exclude the idea of reviving the project in several years.

Ava DuVernay announced the decision on her Twitter account, accompanying her post with a photo of herself and Tom King.

“Tom, I loved writing NEW GODS with you. I’m shocked that the saga of Barda, Scott, Granny, Highfather and The Furies ends like this. Diving into Kirby’s Fourth World has been the adventure of a lifetime. . We can’t take it away. Thank you for your friendship. And don’t forget … #DarkseidIs “

For his part, the screenwriter cracked a response full of tenderness to his writing partner: “Ava! I’m incredibly proud of the work we did, it was such a joy to see you bring your passion and talent to these characters. I really felt Kirby’s legacy was honored here and I wish we could continue. That Barda / Scott scene where … damn it. “

A message in which the author teases what could have happened in their aborted feature film.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League’s Darkseid should have been in the cast

If no name had been officially announced to the cast of New Gods, the exchanges between the director and Ray Porter, the actor who lends his voice to Darkseid in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, leave little room for doubt: the actor should have resume his role of super-villain.

Thanks, Ray. You have always been kind to me. I appreciate you and the fans who have supported you. I have been told that the studio will explain soon what they have planned for the characters of NEW GODS. I hope our paths will cross one day, sir. If it’s not in the Fourth World, then in another.
