Available on Amazon Prime Video, Cruel Summer is the new teen binger series this summer. This show produced by Jessica Biel recounts the crossed destinies of Kate Wallis (Olivia Holt) and Jeanette Turner (Chiara Aurelia), two teenage girls from a small town in Texas during three summers in the 1990s.
The first mysteriously disappears for a year and when she reappears, she accuses the second of not having reported her disappearance and of having witnessed her being locked up after her kidnapping. Cruel Summer follows the legal battle between the two young women and chronicles the impact of Kate’s kidnapping on the lives of teenage girls.
Cruel Summer on Prime Video: What is this breathtaking teenage series that smells of the 90s worth?
This thriller benefits from a polished staging with a typed note that begins each episode, like “The events which are about to unfold took place around (a specific date)”. This narrative construction makes the series very believable and could make believe that it is inspired by a real case of kidnapping.
Is Cruel Summer based on a true story?
The answer is very simple: Cruel Summer is not based on a true story. This is pure fiction and even the city in which the action is located is fictitious. Note also that Cruel Summer is not adapted from a book or a novel for young adults.
Nevertheless, creator Bert V. Royal, who knows a thing or two about storytelling about teenage girls since we owe him Easy A with Emma Stone, told Deadline that he was inspired by real teenage stories for Cruel Summer and that he wanted to bring up important topics:
“We are truly excited to tell this story which we hope will spark some interesting conversations about how society can turn a person’s life upside down and send them to the hell of infamy before – and sometimes. , even despite – the facts. “
Cruel Summer is very realistic since it plunges us into the 1990s with ease thanks to an authentic staging and decor, but it remains a fiction.
