Santi Mina is no longer a Celta player. The Galician club has decided to unilaterally terminate the contract that linked it with the footballer, on whom a four-year prison sentence for sexual abuse weighs, on which everything indicates that the Supreme Court will have to be defined. Celta warns in a statement that it has “the strong support of LaLiga” to make this decision. “Celta’s values are above all else and the club would defend them to the last consequences, including the repercussions that it could have on sports planning,” explains the sky-blue club, which could see its economic availability reduced to reinforce the squad depending on how this matter is handled.
The dismissal will presumably lead both parties to an act of conciliation and try to find an agreement there to resolve a contract that had a year remaining. The player, convicted of sexual abuse after events that occurred in Mojácar (Almería) in the summer of 2017, signed that bond two years later, when he returned to Vigo after a spell at Valencia. He then he was already immersed in a judicial process that ended in conviction. When this was finalized by a court in Almería, President Carlos Mouriño acknowledged that this decision was wrong.
Mina then stopped playing for Celta in May 2022. And that summer the club reached an agreement with the Arab Al Shabab for the footballer to play there during the past season. Meanwhile, the Superior Court of Justice of Andalusia was studying an appeal that reduced the financial compensation to the victim, but maintained the prison sentence on which the Supreme Court must now ultimately decide.
The club from Vigo assures that it has “thoroughly” analyzed the different legal alternatives available. “Celta is a centenary club born from an act of exemplary generosity and throughout its history it has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to society and the defense of values that are already a hallmark of the club on countless occasions,” he explained in your statement. For almost a month the footballer trained outside the team in the sports city while not all the options crystallized for him to go out on loan again. But in the end came the dismissal.
