Chemistry Class 12 Syllabus 2023-24

Central Board of Secondary Education prescribed the Chemistry Class 12 Syllabus 2023-24 and has released it much earlier this year. The CBSE Class 12 Chemistry Syllabus 2023-24 comprises of 10 units in total and the theory part carries 70 marks. The remaining 30 marks totals for the practical activities. The CBSE Class 12th Syllabus 2023-24 for chemistry will help the students to understand the courses curriculum and prepare accordingly so that they can score well in their board exams.

  2. Lanthanoids- Electronic configuration, oxidation states, chemical reactivity and lanthanoid contraction and its consequences.
  3. Actinoids- Electronic configuration, oxidation states and comparison with lanthanoids.

Chapter- 5 (Coordination Compounds)

Unit 5: Coordination Compounds

  1. Coordination compounds – Introduction, ligands, coordination number, color, magnetic properties and shapes
  2. IUPAC nomenclature of mononuclear coordination compounds.
  3. Bonding
  4. Werner’s theory, VBT, and CFT; structure and stereoisomerism
  5. The importance of coordination compounds (in qualitative analysis, extraction of metals and biological system).

Chapter- 6 (Haloalkanes and Haloarenes)

  1. Haloalkanes: Nomenclature, nature of C–X bond, physical and chemical properties, optical rotation mechanism of substitution reactions.
  2. Haloarenes: Nature of C–X bond, substitution reactions (Directive influence of halogen in monosubstituted compounds only). Uses and environmental effects of – dichloromethane, trichloro methane, tetrachloromethane, iodoform, freons, DDT.

Chapter- 7 (Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers)

  1. Alcohols: Nomenclature, methods of preparation, physical and chemical properties (of primary alcohols only), identification of primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols, mechanism of dehydration, uses with special reference to methanol and ethanol.
  2. Phenols: Nomenclature, methods of preparation, physical and chemical properties, acidic nature of phenol, electrophilic substitution reactions, uses of phenols.
  3. Ethers: Nomenclature, methods of preparation, physical and chemical properties, uses.

  2. Carboxylic Acids: Nomenclature, acidic nature, methods of preparation, physical and chemical properties; uses.

Chapter- 9 (Amines)

  1. Amines: Nomenclature, classification, structure, methods of preparation, physical and chemical properties, uses, identification of primary, secondary and tertiary amines.
  2. Diazonium salts: Preparation, chemical reactions and importance in synthetic organic chemistry.

Chapter- 10 (Biomolecules)

Unit10: Biomolecules

  1. Carbohydrates – Classification (aldoses and ketoses), monosaccharides (glucose and fructose), D-L configuration oligosaccharides (sucrose, lactose, maltose), polysaccharides (starch, cellulose, glycogen); Importance of carbohydrates.
  2. Proteins -Elementary idea of – amino acids, peptide bond, polypeptides, proteins, structure of proteins – primary, secondary, tertiary structure and quaternary structures (qualitative idea only), denaturation of proteins; enzymes. Hormones – Elementary idea excluding structure.
  3. Vitamins – Classification and functions.
  4. Nucleic Acids: DNA and RNA.

E. Chromatography

(a) Separation of pigments from extracts of leaves and flowers by paper chromatography and determination of Rf values.

(b) Separation of constituents present in an inorganic mixture containing two cations only (constituents having large difference in Rf values to be provided).

F. Preparation of Inorganic CompoundsPreparation of double salt of Ferrous Ammonium Sulphate or Potash Alum. Preparation of Potassium Ferric Oxalate.
G. Preparation of Organic Compounds

Preparation of any one of the following compounds

i) Acetanilide

I. Characteristic tests of carbohydrates, fats and proteins in pure samples and their detection in given foodstuffs. 
J.Determination of concentration/ molarity of KMnO4 solution by titrating it against a standard solution of

CBSE Class 12th Chemistry Syllabus 2023-24 Investigatory Project
Investigatory Project- Scientific investigations involving laboratory testing and collecting information from other sources. A few suggested Projects.

 • Study of the presence of oxalate ions in guava fruit at different stages of ripening.

 • Study the quantity of casein present in different samples of milk. 

• Preparation of soybean milk and its comparison with natural milk with respect to curd formation, the effect of temperature, etc. 

• Study of the effect of Potassium Bisulphate as a food preservative under various conditions (temperature, concentration, time, etc.)

 • Study of digestion of starch by salivary amylase and effect of pH and temperature on it.

 • Comparative study of the rate of fermentation of the following materials: wheat flour, gram flour, potato juice, carrot juice, etc.

 • Extraction of essential oils present in Saunf (aniseed), Ajwain (carum), Illaichi (cardamom).

 • Study of common food adulterants in fat, oil, butter, sugar, turmeric power, chilli powder and pepper. 

How to complete the CBSE Class 12 Chemistry Syllabus 2023-24?

The syllabus is a roadmap to any examination. Here we have mentioned some tips to complete the syllabus and crack the exam with flying colors.

1. Read the entire syllabus thoroughly.

2. Separate the units according to months

3. Plan revision days, for example – you can revise on the 2nd, 5th, and 9th days.

4. After completion of any unit solve some model papers.

How to increase sitting to complete the Class 12 Chemistry Syllabus 2023-24?

You can increase sitting gradually, it’s not a one-day process. Take baby steps i.e. the first day sit for 2 hours and don’t involve yourself in these two hours anywhere except studies. Break these 2 hours into 4 slots. Each slot consists of 30 minutes. study with full focus in these 30 minutes and complete all the chunks likewise. Then second or third day increase an hour. This process will make you consistent and studies will become a habit. That’s how you can increase these hours as per your need and increase your sitting to complete your Class 12 Chemistry Syllabus 2023-24.

Special Tips for CBSE Class 12 Syllabus 2023-24 for Chemistry

Pomodoro technique: You must have heard of studying for a short duration and taking a 5 minutes break. This method is called the Pomodoro technique. In this method, students have to study for 25 minutes. Then take a 5 minutes break to relax, and repeat the process. After being consistent for a week you can increase your focus span and also if you want to sit for a longer time then study for 50 mins and then take 10 mins break and you can repeat it 2 to 3 times. After that, take a long break of 20 to 30 min. This technique is very effective and you won’t feel tired and feel rejuvenated before every study session by using this method.

Feynman technique: This technique is a simple process where you first study a topic then you have to teach the same topic to another person. If you don’t have anyone to teach, you can pretend to teach it to an imaginary audience. While doing so, you will find where you are lacking and were confused about the topic.  Read that topic again by book to clear the point where you were stuck. This technique is effective because you will understand the topic in-depth and also make it simple to teach your imaginary audience.
