Among the talents highlighted by Unifrance, we find Noee Abita (Ava, Slalom), a (In the name of the Earth), Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet (The loves of Anaïs), Maimouna Doucoure (Cute), Karim Leklou (North ferry), Fanny Liatard and Jeremy Trouilh (Gagarin), Deborah Lukumuena (Divine), Rabah Nait Oufella (Grave, Nocturama), Agathe Rousselle (Titanium), Anamaria Vartolomei (The Event).

The faces of the new generation

What more does this new generation of film talent have today? And what does it bring to the world of French cinema? For Rabah Naït Oufella, who started in Between the walls by Laurent Cantet, Palme d’Or in 2008, and recently featured in Arthur Rambo, “the cinema advances” :

“I think that the wild casting has a lot to do with it. Today we give more chances to young people who might not have done a lot of things. And we realize that these young people can do great things too and it’s good that we give them the chance to do it. A lot of films have shown us that it’s possible. Every year, we have new revelations, new actors who come up with their stuff to them.

That’s what I’m trying to highlight. For example, after Between the Walls, I was often asked why I didn’t go to school or why I didn’t take acting lessons. And I think the most important thing is to be comfortable in front of the camera and to bring something more than yourself. It’s just as good as anything you learn a little more academically.”

Demanding and supervised young talents

The new generation of French cinema arrives in the medium with their freshness, their spontaneity, their background, sometimes far from conventions, which does not prevent these talents from being demanding in their career, as explained by Noée Abita, revealed in Ava and César for Best Female Hope for Slalom and currently at the cinema in Passengers of the Night. For her, the most important thing is a good script:

“I am very attached to the screenplay. When it is well written, it moves me. The fact that it is already a work in its own right, I am impressed and it interests me. And then there is the character Sometimes it’s a small character but I like it so much that I want to do it. For example, I have a movie coming out soon, Elvis’ Hips, I have a small role but I loved it. story. And it always depends on the story.”

The same goes for Rabah Naït Oufella: “It’s the script that takes precedence. Films on which the script doesn’t please me, even if it’s a big role, that doesn’t interest me. Even if there’s always has a questioning about the choice of characters, so as not to always play the same thing and renew myself. In my choices, the scenario can be eliminatory, the character not.”

Above all, these new talents are better supported by the profession than their elders were, according to Noée Abita:

“I think we are much more framed than previous generations of actors. For example, I spoke with Emmanuelle Béart [sa marraine des Révélations des César 2022, ndlr] and she told me that at the beginning of her career, she was a bit on her own. His generation of actors was alone. Today, it is very framed, we are very followed. The teams are quite concerned. There’s something a little more laid back and I feel like there’s a bigger frame, anyway.”
