20 years after Moulin Rouge !, a musical will once again open the Cannes Film Festival: carried by Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, Annette will indeed be in charge of launching the festivities on Tuesday, July 6. And will be released in French theaters the same day.

As good news never comes alone, a trailer has been unveiled for the occasion. In order to make a little more concrete the great return to business of Leos Carax, nine years after Holy Motors, which had enjoyed the honors of the Cannes Competition.

Left empty-handed in 2012, the director of Les Amants du Pont Neuf will be entitled to another try this year, since Annette is also selected in Competition. Set to music by the group Sparks, to whom we owe the story, the feature film will visibly resemble a rock opera if we trust the first images of this story centered on a Hollywood couple and their daughter , a child with an exceptional destiny.

Last I heard, 95% of the dialogues will be sung. What is not fully felt in this trailer that promises us “an absolute cinema experience”, while the images suggest that this musical will pay tribute to several genres of the 7th Art.

Its presentation at the 74th Cannes Film Festival will mark the culmination of a long-term project, mentioned since 2015 when the leading female role passed into the hands of Rooney Mara and Michelle Williams before returning to Marion Cotillard, back in opening , 4 years after Les Fantômes d’Ismaël by Arnaud Desplechin.

Attached to the feature film from the start, Adam Driver is also familiar with the Cannes opening since he was at the heart of The Dead Don’t Die by Jim Jarmusch, which opened the ball in 2019. Without knowing, at the time , that we would have to wait two years before being able to return to the Croisette. If all goes well, it will be July 6-17, with a jury chaired by Spike Lee. And the rest of the selection will be announced at the end of May.
