• What they will love: The fans of Toy Story will love putting themselves in the shoes of young Andy and discovering the film the boy saw before receiving his Buzz Lightyear toy. However, this film is sufficient in itself, it is not necessary to have seen the saga launched in 1996 by John Lasseter to understand.
The feature filmAngus MacLane is a real science fiction film led by an iconic character appreciated by all. We discover the life of the Space Ranger, his hopes, his disappointments, his obsessions, his friends and his enemies…
Hero par excellence, Buzz is a character we admire and love. Thanks to this portrait, which highlights Buzz’s flaws, Pixar offers the character a origin story worthy of the greatest science fiction films.
Action, emotion, humor, team spirit, aliens and robots from another planet: everything is there to thrill young and old spectators alike.
Why did Andy claim the Buzz Lightyear toy?
21 years after the release of Toy Story, director Angus MacLane wondered about the film that made young Andy want to ask his parents for an astronaut figurine.
That movie Andy and his friends saw was Buzz Lightyear. The director explains: “I wanted to make something reminiscent of the fun, unassuming big productions of the time.“, he explains.
“I researched a lot, and I studied the workings of this kind of thriller. I knew Buzz had a big hurdle to overcome, and I loved the concept of time dilation found in some sci-fi works.
This kind of literature is full of stories featuring extraordinary characters like Captain America, Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers, to name a few..”
The feature film makes us live a real intergalactic adventure for everyone from 6 years old.
• What may worry them: In Buzz Lightningthe hero and his crew of over a thousand scientists and technicians are stranded on T’Kani Prime, a swampy planet with dangerous vines and giant insects located about 4.2 million light-years from Earth. Earth.
The Space Ranger feels guilty and will try at all costs to bring everyone back to Earth, even if he has to devote his life to it.
From the beginning of the film, we witness Buzz’s first failure. The astronaut is stunned and blames himself. A feeling that everyone has already felt, and which shows the youngest that even heroes can make mistakes.
The director further clarifies:Life is full of the unexpected. Being nostalgic, or wishing things had turned out differently, is probably a waste of time.” A message that allows viewers to understand that we must continue to move forward despite past mistakes.
The feature film is a real science fiction film with fights, giant insects, suspense and it is particularly about time travel.
If all this is well explained, it is still necessary to be very attentive to understand everything, hence the fact that this Pixar is aimed more at children of at least 6 years old, unlike the Toy Story films, accessible earlier.
• What they will keep inside them: If Toy Story made the children of the 90s believe that toys come to life once they are on their own, Buzz Lightyear will allow a new generation to imagine the life their toys may have had before reaching their bedroom.
Buzz Lightyear puts stars in your eyes and encourages you to reflect on the passage of time, and what you do with it.
What do we do with the passage of time?
Angus MacLane explains: “While Buzz obsesses over his mistake, Alisha decides she’s going to do her best with whatever means at hand. She wants to make the most of the time she has left, no matter what planet she’s on..” And this is one of the messages we keep from the film: enjoy every moment because time flies.
Like Toy Story, Buzz Lightyear also puts friendship at the heart of the film. Alisha is the hero’s anchor, it’s their relationship that will help him understand things better. She’s the one who gives him the cat-robot Sox, which will become his faithful companion and your children’s favorite character.
Buzz’s encounter with Izzy, Mo and Darby, the broken arms of the Zap Patrol, will also turn the lone hero’s life upside down. These apprentice rangers who bother him at first will eventually turn out to be like family. Much like Woody, Rex and Andy’s other toys in the first Toy Story.
And this is one of the strong messages of the film: getting to know others, creating links is what allows us to move forward. Friendship will allow Buzz to understand that we have to move on.
It should also be noted that the film is the first Pixar feature film to openly present a couple of married women and mothers. A historic step and a first step of the American giant towards inclusiveness.
Buzz Lightning is a sci-fi film with heart that will sometimes amuse you, sometimes upset you and make you think about what you do with the passing of time, whether you are a child or an adult.
