“Your Grace, it was a pleasure.” It is by the pen – at least the tweet – of the always very well informed Lady Whistledown that Netflix and the team of The Chronicle of Bridgertons announced the absence of Regé-Jean Page, alias the Duke of Hastings Simon Bassett, from season 2 of the series. And probably even his final departure from the show produced by Shonda Rhimes.
“Dear readers. With all eyes on Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s quest to find a Viscountess, we bid farewell to Regé-Jean Page, who successfully played the Duke of Hastings. Simon’s presence at the screen will be missed, but he will always be part of the Bridgerton family. Daphne will remain a devoted wife and sister, and help her brother through the next social season and what it has to offer, more intrigue and romance that my readers could handle. Your devoted Lady Whistledown “
If the subject of season 2, centered on the marital and social (and love?) Quest of Anthony Bridgerton, was logically enough to relegate Daphne and Simon to the background, the creator Chris Van Dusen had yet confirmed last January the presence of two actors in the credits (“Even if they are married, they will always be Bridgertons to me. So they have a place in the series “).
This announcement is therefore a shock for the fans, especially as the absence of Regé-Jean Page, according to what one deciphers in the words of Lady Whistledown, finally looks like a definitive departure of the comedian, very much courted since the worldwide success of season 1. Currently at work on the thriller The Gray Man of the Russo brothers (Avengers Endgame), he will then join the Dungeons & Dragons boards in the lead role … and remain among the favorites to reprise the role of James Bond.
This departure seems in any case appeased, if we judge by the message tweeted by the actor in response to the announcement of Lady Whistledown: “Fun and privilege! An honor to be a member of the family – on screen and behind the scenes, the cast, crew and incredible fans – the love is real and will never stop growing.”
Season 2 of The Bridgertons Chronicle. is due to start filming this spring 2021 in London. Alongside Jonathan Bailey (Anthony) and Phoebe Dynevor (Daphné), we will notably find Simone Ashley, seen in Sex Education. The future viewing of these new episodes will then perhaps be for some surrounded by the scents candles with the scent of Simon, in order to remember with nostalgia the handsome Duke?
