We last covered Apiwat Chitapanya in 2019, when he amalgamated art and design to give birth to the Ink calligraphy furniture series for the furniture brand Masaya. The design of the calligraphy furniture series was inspired by the rhythm and flow of Chinese calligraphy painting. Three years later, the Thai designer carries his collaboration with Masaya forward and has introduced a furniture series dubbed ‘My Best Friend’ that takes its inspiration from the bond mankind shares with pets.
Melted in a foundry and cast into shapes of dogs, cats and frogs, the furniture series comprises chairs, coat racks, and tables that are made from brass casting. Each furniture piece doubles as a sculptural piece and vice versa.
In the case of the chairs, a dog sculpture functions as a backrest that is attached to a plush seat. The design reflects the emotion, closeness, and friendship a dog shares with its owner. So much so that you can comfortably lay your head over his side belly which in this case is the backrest.
Another item from the collection is a table that has a cat sculpture attached to it. Unlike dogs who are known for playful and active behavior, cats prefer to hide and sleep. Apiwat takes this attribute into consideration while designing a side table featuring a brass feline affixed underneath it.
However, there are a few cat breeds who like exploring and getting a little notorious. Paying an ode to such felines, the Thai designer creates a low side table that depicts a cat playfully jumping off the surface. The designer has also excellently managed to showcase the cat knocking off a vase on its way. It looks so creative that the vase and the cat end up forming the table’s fourth leg.

Another creation in the furniture series is a coat rack that includes multiple frogs clinging onto plant stems. These frogs seem to be waiting for their turn to hop into another stem. The stems form individual curved arms for the rack, while the frogs function as hooks.
