In the role of Lucille Ball, undisputed icon of American television, Nicole Kidman appears once again transformed. Oscar winner JK Simmons for his terrifying role in Whiplash by Damien Chazelle, plays William Frawley, actor in I love lucy. Nina Arianda (Goliath), Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development), Clark Gregg (Agents of SHIELD) and Jake Lacy (The White Lotus) complete the distribution.

In France, it is a name that evokes little, but on the other side of the Atlantic, it is that of a legend. Lucille Ball is perhaps the greatest actress in American television. They play the Ricardo, a couple who draw crowds to watch television sets.

This film, scripted and directed by Aaron Sorkin – King of Hollywood Writing – is a behind-the-scenes look at America’s best-known series. Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem.

The rest of the story unfolds over a week while a succession of dramas shakes the flagship couple Ball-Arnaz. Formidably written, Being the Ricardos combines the scenes of dialogue and manages to captivate the viewer thanks to the obvious talent of Aaron Sorkin. The film is chatty, but rarely boring. Above all, it offers to Nicole kidman a new role that lives up to its reputation. The star’s face, transformed by prosthetics, identically recreates the comic expressions of the real Lucy.

On screen, each actor interprets their character in two different ways: there’s the one behind the scenes and the one in the series, once the cameras roll. It is besides the play of all this casting which makes the great strength of the project. However, the target audience for the film is limited. Nicole Kidman worshipers will find something for them, but what about the others?

Being the Ricardos is not the hoped-for entry point to take an interest in Lucille Ball’s journey and the history of the sitcom. The biopic will speak much more to viewers already familiar with this universe. There is always the formidable Sorkin-Kidman collaboration to arouse curiosity.

Being the Ricardos is available on Amazon Prime Video.
