Released October 21 on DVD, Blu-Ray and VOD, “Batman – A Mourning in the Family” adapts one of the most famous Batman stories by having you participate, since you can decide Robin’s fate. in this interactive short.
Who would have thought that the AlloCiné slogan, “Don’t just be a spectator”, would one day apply to a Batman adventure? Yet this is what the film Un mourning in the family offers you: adapted from the famous comic book signed Jim Starlin and Jim Aparo at the end of the 80s, and in which Robin was killed by the Joker, this interactive short film puts you to contribution since you can decide the fate of the Acolyte of the Batman and choose to rewrite history by saving him, quietly or narrowly, or to respect the base material by letting him die.
After Black Mirror or Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, to cite only recent examples, Batman is therefore betting on interactivity with three options which lead to as many possible endings at the end of the introductory sequence. Depending on the choice you make, the adventure will be more or less long, but you can very quickly go back, when the credits roll, to start from scratch and move in another direction. Among the possibilities offered to you, that of letting Robin die turns out to be the most interesting because this story is the longest of all, with other choices as well. The film is then inspired by the narrative arc “Under the Red Hood”, published between 2004 and 2005, which followed “Mourning in the family”… and was the subject of an animated feature film in 2010.
A film of which we find several sequences here, which may leave fans hungry for what looks less like a real adaptation of “Mourning in the family” than a mix between two remarkable stories. Others, on the other hand, may be tempted to turn to Under the Red Hood, very successful, which focuses in particular on the values of Batman and his complex relationship with death and killing, which we find here some traces. While waiting for the next feature film, Soul of the Dragon, slated for January 2021 in the US, this video release looks more like a nice bonus compilation, whether it’s the interactive story or the four shorts that are Sgt. Rock, Adam strange, The Phantom Stranger and Death.
“Batman – Mourning in the family” by Brandon Vietti – Available on video since October 21, 2020.
