While Asterix and Obelix on Her Majesty’s Secret Service is being broadcast on M6, what do we know about the next film directed by Guillaume Canet? We take stock.
Tonight, M6 is broadcasting Asterix and Obelix: In Her Majesty’s Service. Released in 2012, the film by Laurent Tirard, starring Edouard Baer and Gérard Depardieu, is the fourth live-action adaptation.
As a reminder, the comedy had been preceded, in 1999, by Asterix and Obelix against Caesar by Claude Zidi; then in 2002, Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra, by Alain Chabat, and Asterix at the Olympic Games by Frédéric Forestier and Thomas Langmann in 2008.
Asterix and Obelix: At Her Majesty’s Service by Laurent Tirard, released in 2012, is the latest live action adaptation to date.
10 years after the last opus to date, a new Asterix has therefore been produced by Guillaume Canet, under the title Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Empire. Filming wrapped up last summer after 17 weeks of work.
What will be the plot?
A cart arrives at the Gallic village with the Chinese princess Fu Yi who came to ask for help after the coup d’etat of a certain Deng Tsin Qin, who overthrew the empress. The reputation of the irreducible Gauls is known as far as Shanghai.
Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Empire will be an original scenario, not adapted from one or more comics already published. This is the first time, outside of animation, that an Asterix film has been based on a completely new story, imagined by Philippe Mechelen and Julien Hervé. The initial idea was launched by the producer Yohan Baiada, who interested the Editions Albert René (holders of the work of Uderzo and Goscinny).
Guillaume Canet indicated that “Asterix, already a little vegan, [fera] reprimands to Obelix for his consumption of boars. Both will also discover the feeling of love. The place of women is also more important, you will see…“
What will be the artistic and humorous ambitions?
For this very big budget film, Guillaume Canet gave some clues about his visual ambitions: “I know that we can do something crazy and that we don’t see much in France: a real great adventure film, epic, with sumptuous sets and costumes.”
I’m a big fan of Chinese cinema and its crazy fights
And to add:The idea is to make children and parents laugh by returning to an offbeat Chabat-style humor while having a very strong, magical visual ambition, like Braveheart that meets Tiger and Dragon! I’m a big fan of Chinese cinema and its crazy fights, with the characters flying. We will confront the kung-fu and the brute force of our Gallic heroes.”
The cast will bring together several families of humor, including a number of actors who will make their first foray into the saga, from Pierre Richard to Franck Gastambide. “I have the skills to do [de la comédie] and I like to change registerhe says. I wanted to finally make a film that my two children could see… Asterix is my relationship with my father.”
We also know a little more about what led to Canet’s choice to finally embody Asterix, which was not the filmmaker’s first idea. It was the producers who saw things that way, in particular Alain Attal, who has followed Guillaume Canet since his very beginnings. “They said to me: The energetic little nervous, it’s you”reports Guillaume Canet, who initially thought of playing César.

Florent Manaudou will also be in the distribution (in the role of a coach), and that the son of Guillaume Canet and Marion Cotillard, Marcel, 10, could make an appearance. Zlatan will play the character of Antivirus, “Cesar’s favorite centurion. Initially, it was called Abribus, but we renamed it Antivirus because we’re waiting for it and it’s slow to arrive, like the vaccine! It’s Yohan’s idea Baiada, the co-producer. We were looking for someone with presence and arrogance. I managed to contact him, it made him laugh. And what’s more, he does taekwondo!“
Franck Gastambide will also be among the guests. Asked by us about this experience, the one who was recently in Without respite on Netflix assured:
First, I was very flattered that Guillaume Canet offered me this. I wasn’t completely sure that Guillaume knew who I was or that he knew what I was doing, and in fact I was totally wrong about him.
And to clarify:I play the leader of the pirates and it’s an incredible adventure. I was already very impressed by Guillaume Canet’s work but I am even more so since I saw this huge boat that he piloted for months and months. I’m very flattered to be offered this and to be in the middle of this huge cast.”
Franck Gastambide then concluded on an exciting note for all fans of the most famous Gaulish duo: “I can’t wait to see but the noises from the hallway of the editing rooms are very, very positive.”
The release of Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Empire is scheduled for February 1, 2023.
