Asterix and Obelix against Caesar: the film’s major inconsistency with comics

Asterix and Obelix against César is the first adaptation of the universe of Asterix with actors in flesh and blood, and at the time, the largest budget in the history of French cinema.

It must be said that the village of Armorique is built for the most part inside a huge large studio, the performers of the Gauls are all famous actors, and the costumes and special effects are also quite expensive.

However, the script of the feature film, written by Claude Zidi and dialogued by Gérard Lauzier, contains a major inconsistency with the universe of the original comic book signed Albert Uderzo and René Goscinny. Indeed, from Asterix the gallic, the first album, it is established that the effects of the magic potion last for several hours.

The next two boxes show the Roman having to drop the boulder, as the potion’s effects wear off. Yet at the start ofAsterix and Obelix against Caesar, the centurion Caius Bonus (Jean-Pierre Castaldi) told Detritus (Roberto Benigni) that the effects of the drink only lasted“ten minutes” and that only Obelix, who fell into it when he was little, benefits permanently.

Claude Zidi therefore, consciously or not, took liberties with the work of the authors of Asterix.

However, this inconsistency between the film and the comics should not obscure certain inconsistencies on the magic potion existing within the comics themselves, as when in Asterix the gallic, our hero drinks a whole pot of potion without suffering any side effects, but a Roman doing the same in The Obelix galley turns into granite.

Asterix and Obelix against Caesar will bring together 8.94 million tickets and will pave the way for Asterix and Obelix: mission Cleopatra by Alain Chabat, which will be released in 2002.
