While the sequel to “Ant-Man” was broadcast last night on TF1, did you know that in the Marvel comic-books, it was the Wasp itself who had found the name of the Avengers?
On the big screen, Ant-Man and the Wasp (whose adventures were broadcast last night on TF1) did not join the ranks of the Avengers immediately, and began by fighting their own battles before participating in the final fireworks display against Thanos, at the end of Endgame.
Yet, as all fans of the original comic books are sure to know, their involvement with the Avengers was much greater between the pages of the comics created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Indeed, contrary to what we can see in the Joss Whedon film released in 2012, Ant-Man and the Wasp were initially among the founding members of the super-team.
In the first issue of the collection Avengers (published in September 1963 by Marvel to counter the Justice League of DC Comics), the two characters indeed joined forces with Thor, Hulk and Iron Man to face Loki. Captain America, who is supposed to have united the team according to the films, will not join her until later in the comics.
But the story doesn’t end here! Not content with being among the 5 pillars of the Avengers, Ant-Man and the Wasp also came up with the name of the super-team on their own. After defeating Loki at the end of the first episode, while the heroes searched for a “group name”, the Wasp suggested this: “It would have to be something colorful, theatrical, like the Avengers, or …”
Ant-Man would answer him: “Or, nothing at all! That’s it! The Avengers !!”
More than fifty years before being played by Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly in Ant-Man and the Wasp, the two characters therefore symbolically launched the legend of the Avengers. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe and more specifically in Captain Marvel, it is however Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) who baptizes his future team by taking inspiration from the word inscribed on the cockpit of Carol Denvers: Avenger.
