“The Batman”, “The Flash”, the sequel to “Shazam!” and “Aquaman” or “Black Adam” with Dwayne Johnson: follow the guides for the next DC films expected at the cinema. With a series linked to “The Suicide Squad” as a bonus.
Because of the pandemic and the postponements (of filming and release) it has engendered, The Suicide Squad is the only DC feature film to be released in theaters in 2021. But the Warner will make up for it next year, with no less four films already planned. And even a series, or even two.
From The Batman to The Flash, via Shazam and his nemesis Black Adam, or the return of Aquaman, here is what Warner and DC have in store for us soon. Knowing that we have only retained projects that are already well advanced and have a release date. Or a finished shoot in the case of our first entry.
THE BATMAN – MARCH 2, 2022
It is, to date, the most anticipated of DC films. And his various postponements linked to the Covid-19 crisis have not tainted his aura. Like Todd Phillips’ Joker, The Batman will take place in a different universe than that set up with Man of Steel, and will therefore be able to follow its own path without worrying about any overall continuity.
In front of Matt Reeves’ camera, Robert Pattinson plays the Batman alongside Zoë Kravitz (Catwoman), Paul Dano (the Mystery Man) or Colin Farrell (the Penguin). Raised from 25% of total shots, the trailer unveiled last August made a strong impression, and suggests a Seven-like atmosphere. Note that the feature film will look at the hero’s early years and will insist on his detective side, but will not be an origin story. Although it wouldn’t be surprising if the death of Bruce’s parents was brought up again.
Note also that, like The Suicide Squad with Peacemaker, the universe of The Batman will continue on HBO Max with a series centered on Commissioner Gordon played by Jeffrey Wright.
BLACK ADAM – JULY 27, 2022
Did you like Shazam? Discover his nemesis! Cast even before Zachary Levi seizes the hero’s costume, Dwayne Johnson will finally become Black Adam on the big screen. Either, if the film by Jaume Collet-Serra (Jungle Cruise) is faithful to the comic books, the story of a man who inherits the powers of six gods in Ancient Egypt but sinks in the dark side. Over time, the character has oscillated between Good and Evil, so it remains to be seen which side will be chosen here.
Expected in July 2022 on our screens, Black Adam will stage the Justice Society of America, ancestor of the Justice League, with in particular Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo) or even Doctor Fate, to whom the ex-Bond Pierce Brosnan will lend his features. Note also the presence in the casting of Uli Latukefu, interpreter of Dwayne Johnson young in the series Young Rock. For flashbacks?
THE FLASH – NOVEMBER 2, 2022
He’s the fastest man in the world, but he had a hell of a time to start. Postponed several times, according to the changes of writers and / or directors, The Flash is on the right track. With Andy Muschietti (It) at the helm and, always, Ezra Miller in the lead role. And two Batman for the price of a feature film: that of Ben Affleck and that of Michael Keaton, who takes over the role three decades after having illustrated himself with Tim Burton.
Because it will be a question of multiverse and a parallel world in which Barry Allen finds himself, no doubt thanks to the “Speed Force”. Contrary to what had been announced about the previous versions, the scenario no longer seems really inspired by the comic book. “Flashpoint”, in which the past changed and the present altered. Verdict in November 2022, with the first steps of Sasha Calle in the costume of Supergirl.
AQUAMAN 2 – DECEMBER 14, 2022
Batman v Superman? No. Wonder Woman? No more. The Justice League? Even less. The first billionaire in the DC shared universe at the global box office is Aquaman. Released at the end of 2018, the feature film by James Wan allowed Warner to cross this symbolic milestone. It is therefore logical that the director is backing up for a sequel expected at the same time in the year. But in 2022.
While filming began in July, little is known about the plot. But its title, “The Lost Kingdom”, suggests that there will be a great deal of “Lost Kingdom”, one of the seven over which Arthur Curry, still played by Jason Momoa, is supposed to rule. At his side, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Patrick Wilson and Dolph Lundgren plunge again. And Pilou Asbæk will be one of the new kids, in a still secret role.
SHAZAM 2 – MAY 31, 2023
For now, this is the last DC movie with a release date: Shazam 2. Or Fury of the gods, its full title which suggests that this second adventure of the hero alternately embodied by Asher Angel and Zachary Levi will be less light and more epic. While waiting for his nemesis Black Adam to stand in his way, this time he will be pitted against Hespera (Helen Mirren) and Calypso (Lucy Liu).
Expected in the casting of Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, Rachel Zegler will also be there and could be with the villains, since she will play Hespera’s sister. Once again, Shazam will need his family, which will be complete again, on the youth side as well as their adult and superheroic counterparts, including Adam Brody, Meagan Good and Ross Butler. A reunion orchestrated by David F. Sandberg, director of the first opus.
