On November 3, Phase IV of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will continue on the big screen. With “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” just released, find out what “The Eternals” have in store for you.
Two months. This is the time we will have to wait between the next two Marvel Cinematic Universe films on the big screen this fall. While Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has only just landed, the next Phase IV installment will be released in early November. So let’s review what The Eternals have in store for us.
WHEN DOES IT COME OUT?
The Eternals hits theaters on November 3. And two days later, on the 5th, in the United States. Note that, like Shang-Chi and unlike Black Widow, the feature film will be exclusively visible in theaters across the Atlantic, because a simultaneous release on Disney + is currently excluded.
WHAT DOES IT TALK ABOUT ?
Belonging to an ancient race of human beings, the Eternals, who can manipulate cosmic energy, were created by the Celestials to protect the Earth from their counterparts, the Deviants.
While it is not uncommon to meet Oscar-winning actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Brie Larson, Marisa Tomei or Angelina Jolie here), the directors are less likely to be in the same case. Rewarded as a director for People Like Others, Robert Redford for example illustrated himself in front of the camera in Captain America – The Winter Soldier then Avengers: Endgame.
That Chloé Zhao signs The Eternals is therefore historic. The second woman to win the Oscar for Best Director, last April thanks to Nomadland, she became the first filmmaker to win the precious golden statuette to direct an MCU opus. And this even if his coronation took place during his post-production.
Adapts wide open spaces, deep America, the marginalized and the mix between professional and amateur actors, she therefore finds herself at the controls of a large machine whose budget greatly exceeds all that she could have available for the needs of her three first feature films together. With less freedom? Those who follow her from the start fear it, but the two trailers unveiled so far have reassured them a little.
There are of course superpowers, special effects, and references to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But we recognize the paw of Chloe Zhao in the way she films nature and the skies, and a shot of Salma Hayek with a cowboy hat seems straight from The Rider, released in 2018 in our theaters. From there to thinking that The Eternals will be a truly different MCU installment, it’s only a step that Kevin Feige wants to help us take. By recalling, for example, that she fought and won her case to shoot, as much as possible, in natural settings.
“I had to repeat to them ‘This is what the camera captured, there is not the slightest special effect!'”, thus told the big boss of Marvel Studios compared to extracts presented to the bosses of Disney. “There was a beautiful sunset, with perfect waves and mist rising from the shore towards this giant cliff. [Lorsque j’ai vu Nomadland], I understood that was not just what she wanted to bring to Marvel. It’s his signature! “
It can obviously be an advertising effect as too many promotional speeches contain it. But Chloe Zhao also seems to have lived the experience positively: “I want to be careful when talking about ‘my vision’, even though I want people to know that they supported what I wanted to do.”, she explained shortly after her Oscar.
“I want people to know that. But also to make sure they are aware that I have been supported by this incredibly talented team, with some of the most talented artists in the world. It really takes a whole village to do a movie, but they let me lead it. “ See you on November 3 to find out if The Eternals is as much an MCU opus as a real feature film by Chloé Zhao.
WHO IS IT WITH?
For its new heroes, Marvel has gone all out on the casting side, with a mix of well-known faces and rising values, which have made a name for themselves on the independent side or on the small screen, and should explode with the general public. Because if we no longer present Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek, interpreters of Thena and Ajak (who was a man in the comic books), or even Richard Madden and Kit Harington, who will offer us a Game of Thrones meeting (with Ramin Djawadi , composer of the series who will be at the helm here), the same is not true for their partners.
In The Eternals, there will therefore be a bit of Atlanta (Brian Tyree Henry) and the Walking Dead (Lauren Ridloff, alias Connie in the series). Kumail Nanjiani, nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for The Big Sick in 2018. Or two actors revealed at the Cannes Film Festival: Ma Dong-seok (Last train to Busan) and Barry Keoghan (Killing of the sacred deer) . Without forgetting Lia McHugh, seen recently in Songbird.
A solid cast to which we should add Gemma Chan, already seen in Captain Marvel but who will play another role here. And Haaz Sleiman, very little highlighted in the promotion but which will have its importance in the diversity advocated by the feature film, because it was involved in the first LGBTQ + kiss staged in an MCU film. His character will indeed be the husband of Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry).
WHAT RELATIONSHIP TO THE REST OF THE MCU?
The second trailer makes it clear: the Eternals arrived on Earth 7,000 years ago. But they were conspicuous by their absence when the planet was threatened, by the Chitauri taken by Loki in the first Avengers, or when Thanos arrived in Infinity War and Endgame. Because it was forbidden for them to interfere with the events, for a reason which will be explained to us in the feature film.
We can therefore expect an opus taking place on the sidelines of the MCU, which he will make us discover the cosmic side, thanks to the heroes and their opponents, the Deviants. But he will not be completely independent. Because in addition to the traditional post-generic scene intended to teaser one of the following opus, there is mention of the Avengers and Captain America at the turn of a dialogue seen in the first trailer. And Thena is none other than Thanos’ cousin, which may explain why she didn’t face him.
A rumor, never confirmed or denied, even speaks of an appearance of Thanos as a child in the film. And this is perhaps one of the surprises that the latter has in store for us on November 3. In addition to a connection with Shang-Chi? In the post-credits scene of the opus signed Destin Daniel Cretton, it is indeed question of the origin of the rings which the hero seized, and it is said that their making goes back a very long time. The time of the arrival of the Eternals on Earth for example.
