A slightly faster ROG Phone 5?

TL;DR

  • Asus could be working on a ROG Phone 5S device.
  • This device might swap out the standard Snapdragon 888 for the Snapdragon 888 Plus.
  • Otherwise, it looks like it will be mostly identical to the ROG Phone 5.

Asus launched the ROG Phone 5 line earlier this year, bringing a pretty compelling gaming phone to market. What if you need a little more grunt though? Well, it looks like Asus is preparing an upgraded phone for release.

Frequent leaker Mukul Sharma posted an image on Twitter, mentioning an apparent Asus ROG Phone 5S. We’re not quite sure about the source of the image, so we’d recommend you take it with a little caution. But Sharma generally has a good track record when it comes to leaks. It looks like the most significant upgrade might be the move to a Snapdragon 888 Plus chipset. This offers a mild heavyweight CPU clock speed increase and improved machine learning performance over the standard Snapdragon 888, with everything else being identical otherwise.

The rest of the claimed ROG Phone 5S specs seem to be in line with the ROG Phone 5 devices. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though, as the 144Hz OLED screen, 6,000mAh battery, and 65W charging are all still fantastic additions in 2021.

The 16GB to 18GB of RAM and 256GB to 512GB storage figures also point to this being a more expensive device than the vanilla ROG Phone 5 if these are indeed the only RAM/storage variants. The standard ROG Phone 5 offered 8GB to 16GB of RAM and 128GB to 256GB of storage.

There’s no word on a launch window just yet, but we’re guessing the device is weeks away from being official.
