7. Koğuştaki Mucize: the Netflix phenomenon film decrypted by a Turkish journalist - Cinema News

Since its arrival on Netflix, the film 7. Koğuştaki Mucize has enjoyed resounding success. AlloCiné gave the floor to the editor of the Turkish site Beyazperde to decipher the phenomenon.

AlloCiné: How do you explain the success of the film 7. Koğuştaki Mucize in France and in the world?

Hande Kara (Beyazperde): As you may know, this is the originator of a South Korean film. They are very popular with us and I think I can say that we are quite good at remakes. The Turkish version is more melodramatic than the first because the action takes place after the coup d’etat in 1980. Turks love dramas just like the rest of the world. But what has also played in its favor are the tweets of certain celebrities like DJ Snake and Neymar who have a real influence in France and Brazil.

AlloCiné: How was the film received when it was released in Turkey?

Hande Kara: He was the one who won the most money in 2019. No one could have predicted it. There weren’t many reviews around this movie. Sad to say, professionals in Turkey prefer to ignore this kind of production, which is either too melodramatic or low-budget comedies. But viewers love this kind of film. The note gap testifies to this: the public gave much better marks than press critics.

While many have been touched by this film, others find that it does too much. Is it precisely not in the tradition of Turkish cinema to do in the melodramatic?

H.K: If you ask me for my personal opinion: yes I find it too melodic. But the Turks love touching stories. As a film critic, I will answer you that it is overpriced … but the spectators want to cry you have to believe!

What can you tell us about actor Aras Bulut İynemli, who plays Memo?

H.K: It is very popular in Turkey. He is even considered one of the best actors. He has received numerous awards since the start of his career. He is best known for his roles in Öyle Bir Geçer Zaman ki, İçerde, Çukur, Tamam mıyız? and Martıların Efendisi.

What movies would you recommend to those who liked 7. Koğuştaki Mucize?

H.K: I recommend them the previous film by Aras Bulut İynemli, entitled Tamam mıyız and directed by Çağan Irmak. There is also Babam ve Oğlum, another drama available on Netflix, which may make you cry.
