5 Things We Used to Do in the Kitchen That Aren’t As Common Anymore

Ahhh, the good old days.

Well, maybe they weren’t actually THAT good but nostalgia can be quite powerful and there’s that whole thing about looking at the past through rose-colored glasses.

But no matter how you feel about the past, we think you’ll enjoy this discussion about five things that people used to do in their own kitchens that you don’t see as much anymore.

Take a look.

You definitely don’t see this in houses too much anymore, but there was a time when the cook of the household used to grind meat for meals all the time.

Those hand-cranked grinders gave the old arms a good workout, too.

Percolators date back to 1880 before coffee brewing systems were invented. The pots used in this process cycled the boiling water through the coffee grounds using gravity.

Sounds pretty cool!

I can honestly say that I’ve never churned butter or even seen butter churned, but it used to be a regular sight in households.

And the butter is supposed to be creamier and lighter than the stuff you buy in stores, so maybe butter churning will make a comeback…?

When it was common for people to make their own bread and other baked goods at home, breadboxes were very common in kitchens.

You still see them around today but a lot of them are now used for decoration.

This seems to be making a comeback but there was a time when canning your own food was VERY common, especially among older generations and the folks who grew up during the Great Depression.

You didn’t want anything to go to waste, now did you?
