The Spanish Inn / Russian Dolls / Chinese Puzzle trilogy is available on Amazon Prime Video, with the first two films also available on Netflix.

In 2002, Cédric Klapsich invited us to his Spanish inn and we immediately felt good there. The feature tells the story of Xavier, a young man of twenty-five who leaves for Barcelona to complete his studies in economics and learn Spanish. Once there, he joined a flatshare with seven other young people, each from a different country. The first part of a trilogy that will be supplemented by The Russian Dolls and Chinese Puzzle, The Spanish Inn, an exciting generational comedy advocating the mixture of cultures, seduces all along. Difficult, indeed, not to be thrilled by this feel-good movie funny and tender, always extremely fair in his painting of youth and human feelings. And complicated, too, not to want to rub shoulders with these roommates on a daily basis’ so endearing among which, of course, Romain Duris, who undoubtedly obtains here the role of a lifetime.

Classic of the hexagonal comedy, An elephant, that greatly misleads follows the daily life of four friends, remained large children at the approach of the quarantine. Difficult not to succumb to the adventures of Claude Brasseur, Jean Rochefort, Victor Lanoux and Guy Bedos … Full of humor and tenderness, the feature film by Yves Robert is full of cult scenes (Anny Duperey on the air vent a parking lot, Jean Rochefort on horseback above a family picnic, the tennis game interrupted by Marthe Villalonga …), all bathed in the splendid music of Vladimir Cosma. A little gem from the 70s which will be followed a year later by We will all go to paradise, with the return of the same characters.

Le Coeur des hommes is the story of four fathers of families, overwhelmed by complex emotional situations, who question their immature relationship with women when they meet again during a spring. Led by Gérard Darmon, Jean-Pierre Darroussin, Bernard Campan and Marc Lavoine, the film, directed by former journalist Marc Esposito (founder of Studio magazine), was a huge public success. True declaration of love to friendship, this funny and sensitive work largely works thanks to the astonishing alchemy of the quartet of actors, devilishly endearing. Two suites will emerge: Le Coeur des hommes 2 and Le Coeur des hommes 3, Eric Elmosnino replacing Gérard Darmon in the third opus.

Some friends of youth approaching their forties meet on the occasion of the coming to Paris of a Quebec rock star, Bernadette Legranbois, whom they knew during their youth. It is an opportunity for Jean-Michel, Richard, Guido, Antoine and Dany to settle some old accounts and to make a half-sweet, half-bitter balance sheet, of what remains of their teenage dreams. My best friends, directed by Jean-Marie Poiré (Santa Claus is a junk, The Visitors), brings together big names in French cinema including Gérard Lanvin, Jean-Pierre Bacri, Christian Clavier and Marie-Anne Chazel. This film by friends, which required a careful reconstruction of the 60s and 70s, was a theatrical failure but then enjoyed cult status over its appearances on television.
